That's why quality perception isn't always the reality. For instance, when Consumer Reports does a survey of reliability, the Japanese score higher than even the Germans. But... when you look at the actual number of problems the vehicles have per 1000 sold, that isn't the case any longer (this is on a brand by brand basis).

If you bought a Toyota Tacoma or Tundra for instance... there are serious life threatening problems with them but no one knew for a couple of years and it was kept quiet. The Japanese have notorious for "silent recalls" when they can get away with it. For instance, the frame rot issues with the Tacoma... they were quietly replacing entire vehicles for years because it was unrepairable, then word got out and suddenly a recall. Couldn't keep the same issue silent with the Tundra because it previously happened with the Tacoma. Also, the press tends to be a lot friendlier towards imports. Ford got slaughtered for the Firestone tire issue... but who remembers the literally millions of Japanese vehicles recalled prior to that for seat belts failing in an accident? The size of the recall dwarfed the Explorer issue, but there was hardly any press and most people affected didn't even know there was a recall!

In the case of this throttle peddle, they couldn't keep it quiet due to the publicity of a court case. The past 5 years have not been good for Toyota quality, its been slipping.

When a company on top of the game gets cocky they start to make errors. (example Microsoft and Vista)

Amen! It's time for Americans to start trusting American car companies again and putting their hard earned money into American built cars.

I remember a few years ago the most "American" car you could buy was a Mazda 626...
