I have a 9500ix and a ZR4 on the way. I was wondering since the two can link together if I need to have the ZR4 display still. Is the display box the guts of it or is the connector box the actual guts? Even if I need it, does it have to be mounted so I can access it, or is fine to stick it behind the dash somewhere and control everything with the 9500ix?
My next question is where to mount the shifter heads. I obviously have a lot of options on this car, but I doubt a place like in the hoodscoop would be a good choice. The most likely places would be in the grill at the bottom and pretty wide, or in the lower part next to the plate pretty wide. Since the plate would be the obvious target and I can mount and hide them very easily down there, I am leaning towards that, but I don't know if it is too low. The grill isn't bad though, I can either fit it in the mesh or just mount it in front of that.
you dont absolutely need it , no, not at all, the display module is optional when linked to an RD

The ZR4 owners manual says..
Quote:
"If both the detector and the SHIFTER Display Controller are connected at the same time, both will go through a self-test. Once the self-test is complete, the Display controller will go to "sleep", relying on the detector's display any visual information."
I think the "If" at the beginning of that looks like it's not necessaryto have the display connected when the detector is linked to it. But I have never tried..

Stay close to the lights, either under or over the bumper. I would lean toward the upper part.
I am almost certain you will not need the Zr4 display, so everything is from the control box with the Zr4 that you hide away. Just to double check power it up without the control box and plugged to the detector.
Also, if you can cut the upper grill and mount them in there.
For the ZR3, the display is optional, when it is physically connected via the "Link" to the detector.
The way the manual reads for the ZR4 is near-identical to that of the ZR3. So no, that extra display should not be needed.
Keeping the display panel either out in the open or in a nearby, accessible, but typically out-of-view location would offer additional flexiblity, though, as you could run the jammers solely without the integrated detector, if-necessary (either due to choice or detector malfunction).

As for mounting, if you're running a front plate, I'd advise the lower grill option.
If you're not running a front plate I'd get them up in the upper grill, and displace them as far towards each outboard lighting apparatus.
With the former, try to achieve a good balance in distance/separation between the plate and the lighting elements. With the latter, an do the same, but with attention paid to an imaginary center-mass point.
Best of luck!
BTW - nice Scooby!

In case anyone is still wondering, I verified this with Escort. No need to connect the display controller (ZR4) when linking with a x50 or 9500. I think this is how I will proceed.
