Before I came here, I had NO idea how some radar detectors differed from others.
It is absolutely AMAZING to see the results and how much different they REALLY are.
Best Buy, RadioShack, Wallmart and any other store that carry radar detectors are most likely UNTRAINED and do not know a THING about radar detectors.
The sad thing is, that most of the people on these stores will recommend the cobras. They are the lowest of low, the hardest to get out of the box and most of all, they leak like crazy.
I have to thank radarbusters.com and radardetector.net for their outstanding service and how much they've helped me understand what these radar detectors are and how they work and SPECIALLY how they differ from others.
Anyway, if you just recently bought a cobra RETURN IT ASAP! Why you ask? They are bad, they leak greatly, their distance is so low you'll see the cop feet away from you before it starts to go off and it is the most annoying unit you could buy, giving you false alerts as you drive and even when you're parked in the middle of nowhere!
The other day I was driving with my whistler pro 73 going about 60 on 55 when I noticed my K band going off from 1 to 5 in less than 4 seconds and before I know I look to my right and BAM right there, a guy with a cobra mounted on his windshield it looked like XRS series. So I tested it out you know? I slowed down to 50 to let him pass me for a bit over 200-300 feet and my K band stopped going off. Then I went back to 60 catching up to him and once again BAM K band from 1-5 in a matter of seconds. And i did this three times, his cobra leaked so much it was falsing my whistler pro 73. At one point I even got VG2 alert, it was so annoying. And I know my unit isn't defective because it's helped me before and it works fine.
So once again, cobra users do us all a favor and RETURN YOUR COBRA OR GET RID OF IT AND BUY ONE THAT WORKS.
There are TONS of other radar detectors you can get for the same or even less than the money you spent for the cobra. I bought my whistler pro 73 for $140 and a cobra xrs 9500 costs $150!!
I personally haven't tested any of the new cobra detectors but from my past experience the cobras xrs were the worst I bought, I lost money on them until I came here to realize what mistake I have done. I don't mean to talk down on cobras, they do have some good products but I think they need to do a better job at making radar detectors.
