    Default Cobra 9870 vs 9700

I currently own a Cobra 9870, I'm thinking about upgrading to a 9700. Does the 9700 have a lot better range in KA band? I've noticed police in my area are upgrading to KA band. The 9870 isn't too bad in detecting right now, a little more warning would be nice however. I was going to wait until the Spectre problem was solved but who knows how long that will be if ever as I live in Ontario.

    No it does not.

I would go with a whistler 73 pro, the cobras are there with the features, just not detection range.

I'm torn on detectors in Ontario. An expensive unit is best unless you get it confiscated...

It is likely to see a Spectre-proofed unit on the horizon in the 4th quarter. :? It will be pretty costly I am sure.

I'd stay away from a Cobra.

Whistler intorduced a unit that beat Spectre, but failed VG2.

Maybe if VG2 isnt used in ontario this would be the best option?

Thats strange, how can Spectre not detect it yet VG2 can? I'm pretty sure Spectre scans 11.4-11.6 Ghz. Otherwise Spectre would not be able to detect any of the older detectors. Wouldn't this be true?

I've always wondered why a radar detector can't just randomly change its lo to avoid Spectre. For example if the lo was to change every quarter second or so to some random frequecy, would the Spectre be able to keep up?

    Just a thought.

Radar Roy says that Cobras claim on the 9700 not being able to be detected by Spectre is a joke.

Its not worth it TRUST ME.I had a cobra 9775 it wasn’t bad nor great. SAVE YOUR MONEY and get a Escort Passport 8500 trust me you will  the big difference. It mite be a little more $$$ than you want to spend but it is worth it.

I agree with bearcat. Save your money for a escort 8500x50 its wayyyyyy better. At least, TWICE the range.

VG2 was actually invented in Ontario by an Ontarian (?) company, Techsonics Industries. I am sure all the VG2 are gone now in favour of Spectres, but they might have just passed them down to other cars.

The Whistler Cruisader (?) in question did beat the Spectre at SML however it didn't beat the Spectres at all when Roy fired up his... so maybe just a fluke thing at SML, maybe it overheated or the gain was turned low or whatever.

Cobra's Spectre-proofing attempt had a "Spectre detector" that would shut off the unit when a Spectre was near. However, Stealth Micro Systems just shifted the LO of the Spectre, and upgraded all the Spectres to Spectre II spec. So it is completely useless. And it isn't even good with the VG2, in fact, one of our members got busted with a VG2 using a "Spectre-proof" Cobra unit, look in the Spectre forum.
