Default Hi I'm a new member with a Cobra detector I have a few q.?

Hi I recently got a cobra XRS 9930 from my brother as a gift, I haven't used it yet but when I read topics about this radar detector, people say it sux, did I get a crappy detector as a gift or what? it was expensive though!

Do all cobras suck or what?

please give me all your opinions on this xrs 9930 what you think about it!

Does this detector work good on smokeys laser guns and speed cameras?

I'd be really happy if you answer my topic cus I feel kinda ****ty now after reading bad reviews about cobra detectors!! :? [/b][/code]

Hi kowalski and welcome to the forums. It is a good detector for detecting both X and K band, and its alright at detecting laser. The thing that kills it is its extremely poor Ka detection. Around 50% of cops use Ka. I recommend returning it and getting a Whistler Pro 78 or Bel Vector 955, both great detectors for around the same price (I prefer the whistler for great support and features). Im not sure how cobra can price your detector so high with its lack of performance on the most important band. My $50 Whistler outperformed my girlfriends $150 cobra on Ka band.

Here is a video of a cobra detecting a Speed camera when it is nearly to late:
    YouTube - Cobra XRS 9330 vs Multanova Ka-band 34.3GHz

That is way to close for comfort. Most other detectors would have provided 12-20 second warnings.

The second problem with your detector is that it causes false alarms on almost all other detectors. No one wants to be driving along, and get Ka alerts and have to slow down incase a cop is using Instant on ahead.

If K band is all that is used in your area, be sure to turn off vg-2 immunity so you don't anger other detector users. Otherwise, return it and get something worth using. Seeing you are "Around the world", you might need Ku band detection, which the cobra does offer. Im not sure exactly where you are, however.

Hey buddy thank for sharing info, I live in Denmark Europe and here those detectors are all banned, so i don't think it will annoy other detectors on the road. Smokey uses LASER GUNS PROLASER III IN Denmark so does this gun operate on Ka-BAND OR WHAT?

Can u explain further more about this Ka band that my cobra suck of=? is it when the smokey uses their radar or laser guns >? HOW DOES THIS Ka BAND DETECTION SUCK?

I tried to log in on this forum for 2 days now and it was not working page not found, today on friday it works>? strange

thanks for letting me know about those functions being explained to me,thanx

I have the same problems with being able access this website sometimes.

I'm by far no expert on this stuff, but I think that in Europe they use the Ku band. I'm not sure if that is in all places though. That prolaser thing you said before is a laser gun, and Ka is a type of band that comes out of a radar gun.

Like I said, wait for one of these other guys to post that knows a lot more about it though.

Laser and radar are 2 totally different things. Radar can be detected long before a person can see a police officer, while laser cannot. Laser is almost impossible to detect. The police officer must see the car to use laser. The PLIII is a laser gun. No RD(radar detector) will consistently save you from laser. The only real defense against laser is a laser jammer. If RD's are illegal in Denmark, then a laser jammer is surely illegal also. There is a lot to learn, but knowing the difference between radar and laser is the first step.

Im not sure if police in Denmark use Ka band, but it is the most common band in the USA. The Cobra is ok at detecting it when it is in sight. If it is Off Axis, the cobra has no hope of picking the signal up due to design flaws. This leads to bad advanced Ka detection.

For defense against laser, I would suggest getting a liscense plate cover like Laser Shield, or if you can afford one, A jammer like LI. Its hard to get advanced warning on laser because it is a beam of light that scatters and is less concentrated.

X2 on that - I had a Cobra for a short while about 3 years ago and the Ka range was horrible. Last ticket I got was with a Cobra and Ka. With the widespread use of Ka these days you have to get the best. It's just too short of a signal and you need all the range you can get. Even the Whistler 1783 I had was better but still too many close calls. Escort 8500 X50 or V1 is the way to go.

    Just my .02
