Default Is it really true that the Cobra brand Radar BAD??

I bought the XRS version of the Cobra radar. I don't know if it really work that well yet bc it's still winter and there's a lot of obstruction around that may have block some signals. Although I did pick up some Ka and K bands when squad cars come straight towards me. What really annoys me is that from time to time, the radar would not come on!!! I'll have to call Cobra to see what's going on. I hardwire it to the stereo power line of my car. Any ideas?

You might be able to pick up X or K with some distance, but the Ka detection is a joke, and unfortunately for you Ka is what a lot of cops are running these days.

Trust me. I had a Cobra...cost me close to $200. Thought I was top of the line. When I bought the V1, I could not believe the range difference and quality in manufacturing. 1/4 mile K band is nothing. Especially if you're traveling on the highway. Most people here get 1-2 miles K band. My record is about 4-5 miles with K and 2.5 miles with Ka...Others here have even greater distances with Ka...you will never see that on a Cobra.

Cobra usually gets a lot of their ratings because they integrate a lot of fancy features to make it look nice. Compass, Spectre, VG2, etc... After I ditched the Cobra and bought the V1, I drummed up a mirror from an Olds Intrigue with a built in compass to put in my Impala.

If you'd rather buy in a store than ordering online, go get an Escort at Crap Buy (best buy). You will be amazed at the difference. Just don't try to talk to any of their so-called "salespeople" about radar. Read up on stuff here. Ask questions if you have any. You'll learn more.

Trust me, you WILL notice a difference.

Indeed, Cobra's performance on Ka band is so flaky it's not even funny. There's a time when I was parked beside a cop running IO and the Cobra failed to respond.

It's not enough protection, and it's a joke to compare it to any other detector.

Where I live, Ka band is by far my greatest threat. This is where the Cobras are horrible. If you can exchange it or return it, you will definitely see what we are talking about as far as Ka band responds.

    I've had a cobra 6050 and another cobra (9150 i believe)

    6050 pros:
the shape and size of it is tempting for me to use it as a doorstop

    6050 cons:
    useless for detecting radar

    9150 pros:
    hey it has a compass!

    9150 cons:
    useless for detecting radar
