Default Did I just waste my money?

I just recently bought a Cobra 9300, no more than a week ago. I, being completely oblivious to anything having to do with radar detectors, thought what I was spending on it was plenty and I should have been getting a pretty good detector. This purchase was pretty spontaneous, so I had no research beforehand. And after I've been reading, it doesn't seem like this thing is very favorable.

So far, it's seen every cop that's gunned me, which I suppose is a good thing. It does pick up lots of X-band radar out on the highway for no apparent reason, leaving me a bit nervous, but no big deal. There's only been cop that the detector warned me of before I actually saw it, though. I'm pretty sure most of the police were using instant-on, so my hawkeye for police has saved me more than the detector has. I do remember it picking up a sherrif whose radar was on about 10 seconds before I saw him, but that's about it as far as close calls go.

I guess what I'm getting at is this: I'm not looking for a detector that I can just put the pedal to the metal and not worry about anything unless it tells me to. I trust my eyes more than machinery. But, I am relying on this thing to let me know of speed traps and such before the police see me. That's about it. Will this piece of equipment do the job, or did I just blow my money on a beeping box that tells me what my eyes are seeing?

I'm sorry to say cobra is the worst radar detector manufacturer, besides RMR. Sell your cobra on Ebay or return it to the store and get a Whistler Pro 58. The 58 inexpensive, however it's a good radar detector. Everyone here will agree that for the money it's fantastic.

Agree with JTW. That line of Cobras isn't completely useless but they don't have the sensitivity to deal with instant-on reliably. For what it's worth, my girlfriend told me this morning that her XRS9700 was able to give her advance warning on four separate police officers who were likely running constant K-band. I'm sure it wasn't a whole lot of warning but at least she got something.

Honestly, even with a V1 I find that paying attention and knowing the area is more important than my equipment. These days my V1 gives me advance notice on 20-40% of speed traps and the rest I either knew it was a high-risk location, saw brake lights ahead of me, or simply saw part of the officer's vehicle far enough away to lift my right foot.

The 9300 has better range then the 9700 (same as 9600 only no voice) according to roys tests, and I have had a friend that owned a 9300, took it back to the store since i was selling him my 9600. He claimed that he got better warning with his 9300. He loves his cobra, he says he only speeds maybe 5 to 6 over, hes not a big speeder, so the cobra works for him.

He says hes gotten countless prewarnings to laser, which I believe beacuse the cobra is awsome at detecting laser.

Nice options, nice laser detection, but terrable radar range.

My girlfriend has a Crapra XRS 9300, same as you. It works so well that she leaves it on her desk at home so as to avoid the annoyance of the constant falsing, and because it offers absolutely no protection from radar.

Put the 9300 on eBay or return it to the store if you can still get a full refund (you'll only get $30-40 for it on eBay), then get a Whistler Pro-58 or a Bel 795.

Yeah I'm taking the whole returning it thing in consideration. Had I done some research in the first place, I wouldn't have bought this thing.

Here in Alabama most of the police use K and Ka radar, so that's what I've got to watch out for the most. The state troopers use laser, but from what I've read if you're speeding and you see laser, you're probably getting pulled over unless you happen to get lucky and catch some "spray" from another car getting lasered.

So when I go back to school this week I'll probably take this thing back. Hopefully I still have the receipt. If not, eBay it is.

    Thanks for the replies

ou can also get a jammer or some VEIL, that way you have some protection against laser.

If your RD comes in a hard plastic form fitted casing that's impossible to cut open....stay away!!!! Save your money.

Yeah I've learned my lesson. I'll probably sell this thing on eBay (can't find the receipt) to some other uninformed person. Then it's the Pro 58!
