Ok here is some history before reading this little review i put together. I've had the following radar detectors in the following order. POS cobra, another POS cobra, Bel STI driver, Valentine 1 3.872, Escort 8500 refurb, Escort Redline, Cobra xrs r8. Now the reason i had so many different detectors is because i just love getting new detectors and trying them out. The reason i got rid of the V1 and Redline is due to economic woes as in I do live in Michigan. School is really kicking my ass. So i sold those off to pay off some of my credit debt, now...the reason i got the xrs R8 is because i wanted to see just how bad it was compared to the V1 and Redline...plus i got it dirt cheap.
For those who do not know the is the same base unit as the xrs 9960g and the xrs r10g, just without GPS. Mine is the remote model with that little controller that goes anywhere in your car i have mine in my A/C vent.
For starters the remote sort of sucks, hard to push buttons but pretty visible during the day and night.
I've had this unit for about 3-4 weeks. And i only have got one false KA off another unit just a few hours before posting this. So for false alerts i've either been lucky or it's not as bad as everyone claims. I live in southeastern michigan wayne county. The only Ka band we have is 35.5. I've only ran into one 33.8, and one 34.7 in my couple of years of having a detector. All state police run 35.5 and my cities run 35.5.
The K band is actually quite good. I took a trip down to cedar point saturday and picked up some troopers on the turnpike. Both times i did i got about a 2 mile warning, that's with some curves and hills. I also have a bushnell radar gun and i got about a 1.8 mile warning with some heavy heavy traffic, within a few feet of my buddies 8500. The rear detection K band is real impressive off that bushnell i got a 1.3 mile rear detection in heavy heavy traffic. But there is only one city where k band is high and that is grose ile...where my gf lives. I picked her up and around the police station i got a k band alert so i was doing the head swivel thing but saw nothing...until about .3 miles down the road at the light to my right quite a way down i saw there was a leo pulled someone over...very good off axis k band in my opinion, being that GI is full of trees everywhere!
Now on to what matters, the ka band. I ran into a few traps around my town where they run C/O ka. There is one place they sit which is real far back blocked by woods...when you pass you don't see the leo until he already has got you. My it's slightly off axis but blocked by a forest like area. Well the Cobra actually did decent, giving my a .5 mile warning. Both the V1 and the RL gave me .8 when i ran the test prior with the leo within a few feet in the same spot. Coming home today on a bright afternoon i ran into some MSP running 35.5 on I-75. I got a brief alert so i slowed down come to see that around a slight curve and 1.6 miles later a MSP had a semi pulled over...that's pretty darn good for a cobra in my book around a slight curve. Then on 275 later today i got a ka alert, went on and off for about .5 miles thought maybe I/O...then i went up this huge hill and must before the crest the cobra pegged out on the other side was a Leo traveling southbound running C/O, looked at my OD and it was at 2 miles flat. Very impressive for a cobra.
Now 90 degree off axis has some issues. In downtown Monroe i got a 35.5 alert about .1 miles there was a leo sitting in between two building...i mean i had time to slow down but it still was poopy. Then there was a leo coming out of the police station that i seen down the road and the RD started alerting when he turned towards me. So severe off axis has some issues.
But for 35.5 which is suppose to be tough one to pick up i thought the cobra actually did a pretty darn good job. Now i know everyone is going to be like yeah videos for proof blah blah blah. I know i'm working on some videos but most occur at night and i just have my phone. I'm going later on today so i'll see if i can get some videos...but if you want the bushnel video i can take one of that being that i have the gun myself. That was about a 2 mile warning in heavy traffic.
It's no top dog radar but for 150 bucks i think it's pretty good i rate it a 7/10. Of course 10/10 being a V1 and RL. I would say it performs as well as my buddies escort 8500 refurb s7.
