I bought one on deep discount and gave it to my girlfriend, who doesn't go too fast but needs a little protection. It's such a wonderful detector that it now sits in her center console, never plugged in, never used. After a couple weeks of its "Descartes Detector" antics where it seems to Ka-false on ITSELF (it thinks, therefore it is, etc.), she started ignoring the alerts completely and tossed it in her console.

It will probably end up being a birthday present for someone we don't like.

Yours did that too!! Man I read that same thing alot, after I bought the Damn thing, I am sending mine back to Cobra and see if they will fix the problem then see what happens???!!!!????

I would say the only good thing about the Cobra line is they have better laser detection then most shyty RD. I had fun with the laser detection with my universal remote Quite amusing!

My ESD-9870 did the same thing. I believe it's when the unit falls out of cal, mine did it after heat exposure.

oh yeah. im pretty sure its been said that as far as Laser detection goes its- V1, cobra, Escort. however radar detection is a different story .

I must've bought a unit that was out of calibration, then. Regardless, it will be gone soon.

I have a 9300, and I'll comment on it. First off, I'm a pretty basic radar detector user, who goes 10 mph over MAX. I mainly got the detector because (1) Drivers in my family are known for being screwed for "following traffic flow" and getting singled out. and (2) I'm an electronics geek

I also have a Whistler 1793SE, which I am very satisfied with.

As far as the cobra, its detection distances are roughly 50% to 75% versus my Whistler, but as others have commented it seems to have its way with laser. I've gotten 3 early warnings with laser, which surprised the heck out of me.

X and K band detection range is acceptable, usually giving half a mile of warning, but Ka is fairly short, and requires immediate braking in order to be effective (and I've never had the alert go above strength 2/5 on a Ka encounter). Basically, it's the bare minimum to get by. I have, however, heard complaints that the Cobras have issues with some brands of Ka guns, at times not able to detect them at point-blank range.

Bottom line, if you have one it's acceptable, but at times barely enough to get by. If you are considering buying one, spend your money on something else. Even the cheapest Whistler unit will perform far better than this Cobra.

COURTESY NOTICE: If you don't live somewhere that detectors are illegal, PLEASE TURN OFF VG2 DETECTION!! Refer to your manual on doing so. Basically, these Cobra 11-band detectors with VG-2 detection on will give medium-strength K or Ka alerts to anyone within a 5 car distance radius. VERY annoying and scares the crap out of fellow detector users when they cause Ka 9/9 readings once in a while . From my testing, on the 9300 with VG2 off, there is no longer any interference.
