Cobra S-XRS 9970G

Just purchased a brand new one for a low price. Here's some thoughts on it so far:

1. Like the looks of it and the GPS module is nice over the older larger one.

2. Updating is a snap.

3. Suction cups were hard to get to stick. They were still stiff from being new. I just pressed them on a couple times to form them to the windshield and then I licked them the last time. It's holding good now. I think they need softer cups imo.

4. Touch Screen is neat. Needs to be brighter during the sunshine hours. I can still can see it though. Different standby screens are nice. I like the main one.

5. Sensitivity is better than any other ones I've had. X, K & Ka so far.

6. Different City Modes are nice. I like the X+K one the best.

7. Color Modes are cool. I like the Multi the best.

8. Smart Power is nice.

9. Intellimute works good. I don't use the Intellimute Pro. I like to still see the alerts.

10. Volume is ok. A little bit louder would be ok though. Dial knob is clearly marked. Tones and Alerts are pleasing.

11. Battery Voltage and Low Voltage warnings are nice.

12. Power Cord is ok. If you need a long stretch I'd use the straight cord.

13. Audio Out Jack is nice if you need it.

14. Speed Alert & Speed shown with an alert is nice.

15. Being able to label your saved locations are nice.

16. Auto Mute is nice.

17. Safety Alerts are ok. I've gotten some falses on them.

18. VG2 & Spectre 1 & 4 alerts are usually other radar detectors or falses.

19. Ka Band Frequency and Laser PPS ID are nice.

20. Intelliscope is nice.

21. Intelliview & Intelliview Pro is nice.

22. GPS acquisition is faster than the old one was.

23. Compass is nice. I like the GPS compass over the magnetic ones. This has only the GPS one. 9950 had both.

24. Dim & Dark modes are nice.

Some more thoughts on Cobra XRS9970G:

1. K & Ka detection is definitely improved! On par with my Whistler XRS690SE.

2. Touch Screen is great! Hard to see when sun is behind you but other wise is ok.

3. Safety alert, got some falses (Train/Railroad Alerts) in front of some K door openers. (Frequency must read in range of safety transmitters.) I do get some true alerts on highway from Motorist Help Vans & Trucks. Usually they are Emergency Alerts.

4. Intelliview screens are nice! (Speed displayed with Alerts.)

More thoughts on XRS-9970G:

1. Got my first alerts on Speed Trap and on Caution Areas. Works great! Very accurate.

2. Ka alerts on 33.8, 34.7 & 35.5 (34.3), first three all great range! Last one might have been a radar detector.

3. K band range is a big increase.

4. Speed Alert works good.

5. Ramp up is ok, still alittle slow, & Meter is nice. Whistler XTR690SE and V1 is better. Escort, I don't like, it's too fast. (9500i) It sometimes scares the @#%! out of me.

6. Didn't get any Laser alerts where my XTR690SE & Escort did. (Airport) The Whistler seem the best on that area.

I believe this is true also. From what I have been seeing on the net the new Cobra's are far superior to the older versions

Sadly a lot of people still reference all the Cobra's to these very bad older models

Can't wait for the new Vendetta series to come out and see if this is a further improvement

Hey I have a cobra too, it pretty much has the same capabilities as your but with a smaller screen and the aura didn't come standard. My question is what setting should I use in the city? I live in a suburb so gas stations/stores etc. are at almost every corner. Today I had the detector on City x+k mode but my detector was going crazy on Ka frequency I think it was?? at 35.5 ghz or hz, i forget. There were no cops in the area so I think it was a false alert, I don't drive on the highway at all on a daily basis, so what setting is best for me?

x and k is good for city

Do you have x -band in the area?,

If not turn it off.

turn ON auto mute

turn OFF POP Alert

Turn off Spectre

Turn on Intelle-mute but NOT the PRO setting

and set the intelle-mute according to the manuals instructions

I believe 35.5 is caused by certain cars that have the lane assist feature

look up which cars these are

mine does this also on occasion

The small screen Cobra's perform just as the big screen do btw,


x band off, Auto mute and intell mute are the most important things to set here.

Intelli mute is a true good send for city use if set up properly.
