    Default excellent off axis reception

While waiting for a light to change I got a KA band hit. Kept getting it while the traffic rolled by.

I was looking for the leo to drive toward me but about 10 seconds later he DRIVES PAST IN FRONT OF ME.

Cobra has indeed improved their detector line.

    This reception made me smile.

I know the feeling. My 9960G will pickup off axis hits like that. Some times I never even see the LEO.
I think that Cobra's are under rated. I don't care about things like ramp-up. If it beeps, I start looking around.

Yes, the ramp up could stand some improvement.

Cobra's aren't the only detectors to have this problem.

Hope the new line addresses it a bit better.

Yeah my 9960g has pretty impressive off axis detection as well. I can't say it's been great in the past. The first "top of the line" Cobra I tried was the 9930 a few years back. It was deaf to cops sitting in cross traffic just across an intersection from me.

Value is what I would look for in buying one of the "high end" models. Some places sell them waay above the $200 mark. I can go out right now and buy a Bel v955 and get the same level of detection for around 150. Unless you really need the speed camera function, it's pointless to pay more for a Cobra.

got mine on a BIG discount. Cobra's with the aura system display a lot more then speed cameras.

They show other owners posted speed trap areas and GPS speed !

    That really surprised me.

They also have TONS of really nice functions the Bell doesn't have and some a far better display

My model shows specific freqs too like the whistler models.

I have a Bell 995 but frankly it feels like old tech compared to the Cobra

Hope the new line is even better

You know my 9960g doesn't evidently show speed traps the way the iRad does. I don't know what the difference is. I bought an iRad on a lark just to see if it was any better but I ultimately decided it wasn't worth the fuss. But on my daily commute, there's a speed trap (I already knew it was a speed trap) that alerts on the iRad but not o my 9960g, despite the fact that I have updated the database. I know it accepted the update bc it DOES show some "caution areas" that weren't there before. Could it be that the iRad accepts less verified data than the units w/ the thumb drive plug in gps module?

As for price, I did pay a decent sum for my 9960g bc I bought it right when it first came out. I can't complain though, I've used it for 2 or 3 years (can't remember when I got it) now without trouble and without a ticket, lol. I did buy it for the gps features as I had just changed jobs and was driving thru a county with redlight cameras.

Interesting. Guess the aura system is a bit different between the two.

sounds like you have had a ton of good use out of it which makes it worth the price for sure.

getting a lot of good use out of mine too.

Yeah they actually aren't bad detectors, the "high end" ones, at least. The issue with Cobra (and to some degree, with Whistler) is they still market cheap, useless detectors to grab the bottom end of the market. That and the silly advertising angle with exaggerated or pointless claims. It obscures the fact that they do have some decent offerings on the upper end.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Cobra XRS9745 we tested at the last GoL is the same platform.
