    Default Cobra XRS-777 (relabled for Wal-Mart XRS-9700)

I live in Nashville, TN USA.

May 9, 2005 I got ticket for doing 66 in a 45 (southern Briley Pkwy in Nashville, TN). I was in pack of cars, but unfortunately, I was in front and ran into a speed trap. Now this my second ticket in two months. Not good.

I bought a Cobra XRS-777 on May 10, 2005 at Wal-Mart in Hopkinsville, KY. This is my first RD. My kids live there and my daughter had a soccer game that day. I was feeling a bit paranoid about driving because I know that lately the cops have been cracking down on speeders in Nashville. Not only that, but I figured my luck was going to run out pretty soon on the interstate between Nashville,TN and Oak Grove, KY.

I wrote Cobra an e-mail asking about this RD because it is not listed on their web site. I told them that it looks to be a relabled for Wal-Mart XRS-9700. The reply it received back was that I was absolutely correct. Cool... now I know what it is.

It seems to get a lot of POP detections that I can't find with my eyeballs. I leave POP on however because it has alerted for POP a couple of times and then bam, I see a cop. It has picked up a few door openers, but now that I learning where these doors are, I do NOT ignore them. I just make sure I am going the speed limit as they can mask a real Radar gun.

The night I bought it, I was heading back to my apartment (again on Briley Pkwy) and I was alerted to a Ka so I slowed down. Sure enough, as I came around a bend there was a cop on the side of the road facing the same direction as traffic. The alert happened about 1/2 mile from the officer. About a mile down the road from the first guy was one that had someboy pulled over.

Yesteday I was traveling up Briley Pkwy in Nashville. I was going the speed limit because I know the locals have been patroling Briley pretty heavily lately and I was getting some POPs and Ka alerts. As I came around a bend my detector went full alert on Laser. I about jumped out of my skin when the laser alert went off. He was sitting right there and if I had been speeding I would have been nailed. No dought about it. Now I know the locals use Laser in Nashville, TN! I am not sure what good laser detection does since the officer surely would have nailed me if I was speeding.

I travel to Hopkinsville, KY to visit my kids every Wednesday and every other weekend. It's about an hour drive each way and most of it is spent on I-24 running between Oak Grove, KY and Nashville, TN. Wednesday night I was coming home from dinner with the kids and I got a K (or Ka, don't remember) alert that went to 2 bars. I know this is real because most of the time I just get one bar even if the threat is real. I slowed down and about another 1/4 mile down the raod I saw a state trooper in the median. I was still going about 4 over but he didn't bother me. Everyone else was going about that rate of speed too.

I know that POP isn't really that useful with this unit, but I think it would be a mistake to turn it off. I wish that it was a little more sensitive in the threat level department as well. Most threats show up as just one bar.

Overall, I think it was a good thing to get this RD.

Edit: I have this detector mounted on the windsheild, just below the rear veiw mirror.

The first RD i bought was the Cobra 9210(ESD i think they call it) and it worked awesome. Around here SWS isn't used but the SAS is. It has helped me listen to music and know that there is an emergency vech. coming. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that on that detector, you couldn't turn of certain bands also the POP detection on it was almost non-existant.

I could be wrong, but do to recent videos w/ POP guns, You are most likely experiencing "quick trigger" not POP. I think it's safe to say that you do not need to keep POP on. Even with it on, it will only detect 1 of the 2 POP guns on the market, and we arn't even sure it will detect that.

I leave POP detection off on my XRS-777. Radar Roy said it isn't
that important yet. I also get alot of false alerts on KA because of
other people's detectors but these usually don't go over 1 bar.

Speaking of which, i've noticed that if i am passing a car with a cobra detector, my x50 gets a false POP and the cobra gets a VG2 alert or K alert, both FULL ON.

The Cobra, like the X50 and the RX65, has a nasty tendency to say that regular instant-on radar is POP. Even with POP off, it would still be detected, just as regular Ka. POP on a Cobra really isn't worth the trouble anyways, as their detection of real POP encounters stands at around only 20-30%.

    From Radartest.com:
The Cobra’s POP mode performance was dismal. At 1500 feet it had a 20 percent success rate in detecting the BEE III. At 4500 feet it scored 30 percent, too low to be of value unless you’re having a sensationally lucky day.

    Default POP?

I thought POP was just when they took a quick check to see how fast you were going. How does this differ from instant on?

Pop is a different technology all together. You can not replicate a POP burst with instant on quick trigger. This is a patented technology by MPH Industries only.

What is the difference? Well, it is humanly impossible to quick trigger a speed of 16ms. With the pop feature the computer does it for you with the press of a button.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I am still learning... 8)
