One of my lady friends has a fiancee that is a police officer for a rich Ohio city (I will not name it so he does not get in trouble) and he has access to some laser equipment and radar equipment. His MAIN job is traffic enforcement so the city that he works for is rich Anyway he is going to be lasering me at 1000' to 0' and radar me with Ka instant on and constant on. I am not sure if he has access to POP but I do not think that he has. Anyway I will post the results in the next couple of weeks. We are planning on doing this SOON and I am very excited.

It's immediate and if you are in range you're toast as the radar will lock on. Instant on, if used properly, is hard to defeat regardless of the detector. In theory, if you react quickly enough and decelarate at 300/ft per sec (I think that's the stat) you can prevent the radar from locking. In practicality, nobody reacts that quickly and the newer radars lock very quickly - in a split second.

Your best defense against instant on radar is to drive in the right hand lane (cops love to pull you over if you are in the left lane for some reason) and stick with other cars. That way if the cars ahead of you are popped with instant on you'll get warning. And about any detector will be good enough for this. If you are the lone ranger zipping down the highway and get hit with instant on I don't care which detector brand you are using you will get a ticket.

Ka alerts can't possibly be instant, the detector has to scan the whole band and find the signal within it before it can alert. There will be *some* delay, happya$$, I would appriciate it if you could see what *some* is.

I can tell you that with the V1, and probably with the other high-end detectors, it is -almost- instant.

I believe most pre-pop detectors had a sweep rate around 300ms. That was part of the reason they couldn't detect the 67ms pop bursts.

In the SML 2003 test, some of the "pre-pop" detectors DID detect pop. Well, if the detector just happened to be scanning the pop freq when it was being targeted, there would be an alert. Considering the ~300 ms sweep rate, even some non-pop detectors would have a roughly 1 in 4 chance of detecting pop.

I say some, because I believe some units DO delay reporting alerts for a few seconds, not because of a slow sweep, they do this ON PURPOSE to reduce falsing. I read in another post where Roy was talking about the PNI delaying alerts for a second or more. I wonder which manufacturers do this? Especially in the "city" modes on the BEL and Escorts?

I am also wondering just what the manufacturers did for the new pop detectors. Did they speed up the whole Ka sweep, or are they scanning the 33.8 GHz BEE III freq more often, kind of like a "priority scan" like is used in scanners? It would make sense that the V1 made the whole sweep faster since it detects both K and Ka pop, but that is just a guess.

I would think that the "big three" detectors report almost immediately (in their unfiltered modes), at least within the 300ms (1/3s), and possibly much less if they all sped up the sweep for detecting pop.

In my testing with a 1.8 V1 (no-pop) in all modes it alerts on all 3 bands in WAY less than a second after the radar is turned on, and in most cases there is no discernable delay, so any real delay would be difficult to measure. On X and K I used radar guns, but on Ka I used a gunn oscillator...
