    Jim,

I am just curious to hear your latest experiences with the awesome RX65. I am VERY close to buying one for my wife. How do you like it after owning it for a coupke of weeks?

The fact that he has remained quiet for the past few days is telling me that he is enjoying it

Or maybe he is in DEEP depression without his V1 (it is being upgraded).

Actually I got my V1 back yesterday!

As far as the RX-65 goes:

I had always wanted to try out the Escort, so it was difficult for me to decide to buy the RX-65 over the Escort. But with Ku possibly coming soon, I though the RX-65 would be a decent long-term investment, and was a better buy.

So far I haven't done any "serious" driving with it yet, so I haven't really been able to see it in action much. I've only encountered police with it a couple of times so far, but that is just going around town and back and forth to work. It seems to have good range though, and it falses everywhere I expect it to . I've been playing around with it some on the test bench, and I have been wanting to get out and test it against my radar guns, but haven't had the time yet.

As far as performance, I really don't have any complaints. It doesn't false any more than I think it should, and judging from the tests I am sure it has sufficient sensitivity.

I do have some likes/dislikes about the features, but this is highly subjective and based on my personal preferences:

    Suction Cup Mounting

I've always been a user of visor clips more than suction cup mounts, but the RX-65 only comes with the suction cup mount so that is what I tried first. In my car, the windshield slopes a LOT. 90% of people probably don't have a windshield that slopes this much, but I do. And I am kind of a stickler for wanting my detectors as level as possible. I have the RX-65 suction-cup mount bent all the way back so that the back of the suction cups are actually touching the detector, and it is STILL pointing into the air by maybe 30 degrees. But, that's how I've been running it. I definitely like them to be more level than that though.

The thought crossed my mind about bending the mount WAY out (maybe at a 130 degree angle?), and then flipping it over and using it like that, but then the metal mount would be in front of the unit blocking the antenna, so I haven't tried that...

    Visor Clip Mounting

In the past, I've mounted my V1 directly to my headliner (by my rear-view mirror) using the visor clip. This worked well for me, and kept the detector very level with a clear view out the front and rear..

I got my visor mount yesterday that I ordered from Roy, and I tried it out. It works OK clipped to the visor. I wish the cord plugged in to the rear of the unit of the front to keep it more out of the way, but I suppose it was designed mostly for use with the suction-cup mounts. Mounting to the headliner like I did with my V1 wasn't working right for me either, it pointed up at an angle. I am thinking that if I decide to use it on my headliner, I'll have to fabricate a custom mount, which is no big deal...

The good news is, in my girl's car where it will be used the most, the RX-65 mounts to the headliner PERFECT using the visor clip. Very level and secure. I am getting ready to hard-wire it into her car, she's getting ready to drive from Michigan to Arkansas, and then back, 1000+ miles. She's been instructed to give me a report when she gets back.

    Controls

Programming was very easy, even without consulting the manual.

    Just some minor complaints here:

I wish it had a "REAL" power/volume control KNOB like the Escort/V1 instead of "holding down the mute button".

During power-on and power-off, I don't like the fact that you have to hold the button down for a couple of seconds, and if you release too fast it doesn't do anything. It would be fine if the power turned on or off WHILE you hold the button so that you know when you've held it long enough, but you actually have to release it for it to do anything.

I wish the buttons had a "softer" touch to them and less of the "click" feel, especially the mute button.

    Pilot

The voltage display is nice to have, but I will mostly be using "H".
I wish it had the "scanning dot" for the pilot like the Escort, I think that looks cool, much better for the pilot than then "H" or "Highway" or whatever.

    Audio

IMHO the alert tones should be more distinct and constant like the V1. I also wish the tones were more of a gradient, with a constant tone when you are hit with full strength, makes it kind of difficult to judge the threat level just by listening to the audio.

    Signal Strength Meter

STANDARD - This is my preferred mode for when I am driving.

TECH MODE - I have played with this a lot. Not -that- accurate, but seems to be accurate to maybe 12-15 MHz which isn't bad for these frequencies. When I am doing experiments with my gunnplexers, it allows me to at least get them "in the ballpark". Nice to have, can give you a good idea of what models of Ka radar your local police are using. Like I have said before, I think this mode has some very limited use for determining if a signal is a false (in areas where you travel frequently), but for me it is not enough of a benefit to leave this on all of the time.

THREAT DISPLAY - I haven't used this much.
In the manual it says this is like "a minerature spectrum analyzer". I don't think it is, if they really want to see a "minerature spectrum analyzer" then they need to look at the old Passport 5000...

I have my Ka set to International.

I don't trust "Autoscan" mode because it's difficult to tell what it is doing. I've always used "Highway" or "City".

Well. that's about it. Overall seems like a good detector, it will be in my arsenal for a while. I do plan to do some more testing on it when I have some time, I'll keep everyone updated.

    Voice
The voice alert is nothing I will ever use (IMHO having voice alerts in detectors are lame).

    Audio

The audio alerts are loud enough.

I definitely wouldn't go that far
But for a backup, it's great. Solid performance at the right price.
There's still a part of me that wants to try the Escort out too though, maybe I will eventually.

That depends on what time of the month you ask
