Default Four RD Test

I decided to test four RD for the fun of it to see how they would compare with each other. Two are my own personal RD and two were borrowed from friends. My RD are the 9500ix and 8500 X50 (refurb w/S7 horn) and the two borrowed RD were a Whistler XTR-690 and Cobra XRS-9430 (12 band ). I ran these RD against a known, permanent K band speed sign that is very strong and facing southeast on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway bridge as you enter into Metairie, LA. This bridge for the most part is flat and straight with the occasional rise for large boats to pass under. <<JAZZY>> and others know this area well and can attest to its location and strength of the K ban radar signal.

This is by no means scientific but I tried to keep the test as consistent and fair as possible. I started the test at 11:14 am. The temperature when I started the test was 88 degrees (as it registered on my car's gauge) and when I completed the test it was 91 degrees at 12:48 pm. Humidity was high, around 80-85%. I ran each detector separately and never together, and all RD were mounted high to either the left or right of my RVM of my car. I made three passes for each RD and to clarify I ran one RD one time, then I changed to next until all four had made an initial pass and continued this until all four had made three passes. I did this so that as the temperature rose no one RD had an unfair advantage. Each RD was set in highway mode with X band and POP turned off (except for the Cobra which did not allow this function).

The test course was started at the second crossover point from Metairie heading towards Mandeville and at this point is 7.5 miles to the K band sign. There is one slight rise in the road between these two points. Traffic was light to mild and I did not run any RD when I saw a large semi that had the potential to block its view.

I currently do not have the capability to video as my Sony is on the blink, so let me preface this thread with, "take these results anyway you want!" I have tried to conduct an honest test and the results are true with NO embellishment of the facts whatsoever! I have nothing to gain from this other than my wife's look towards me as though I have lost my mind! I have to be honest, I was surprised by the results. Here we go:

8500 X50: Run 1: 4.2mi Run 2: 4.1mi Run 3: 4.2mi
Whistler: Run 1: 1.2mi Run 2: 1.3mi Run 3: 1.2mi
Escort 9500ix: Run 1: 3.9mi Run 2: 4.0mi Run 3: 3.8mi
Cobra XRS-9430: Run 1: 1.5mi Run 2: 1.3mi Run :1.3mi

The two biggest things that surprised me the most was the fact that my X50 beat my beloved ix (I am sure this is no surprise to Happya$$ ) and the second surprise was the fact that the Cobra held its own and even beat the Whistler I really did not expect that at all!

Below are some photos of how the RD's were set up in my vehicle. I do not have a photo of the Cobra (why I do not know, I thought I got a photo of each, but I am human and missed one and I have already given it back so I am not asking for it just for a photo...). You will see some messed up bungee cord that was wrapped up around the Whistler. He has some weird set up that allows him to add this to his motorcycle, but this did not affect the RD at all! You can also see how the Whistler gives my ix a false KA read when they are on together beside each other. The photos are not very good. I should have changed the setting and taken them outside instead of in the apartment garage.

Enjoy, criticize, etc...

Interesting findings. As you discovered, the S7 platform X50 totally OWNS on K-band. Only the V1 (and possibly the 9500ci) can top it.

I'm surprised the Cobra beat the Whistler. I'm not familiar with the Whistler line but AFAIK they make both cheapo as well as and higher-end RDs, but I don't know where the XTR-690 falls in the range.

Awesome! Excellent work jmccam! Wow! At 7.5 miles per run, I'm sure this was tedious and time consuming. Thanks for taking the time.

Please people, run more tests like this. Similar to how there are tons of people running their own laser jammer tests, the more independent tests us enthusiasts run, the less the manufacturers and fanboys can talk out of their collective asses! This is how we get accurate information for the collective us.

Thanks for taking the time to do this testing. And I love seeing the X50 at the top of any test.

Honestly, it was not tedious at all and actually fun. When you have a hobby you enjoy it is not work! I cannot even scratch the surface with regard to the amount of time and effort that other more experienced hobbyist as yourself, Kpatz, Fire65, MEM-TEK and so many other have put forth for the rest of us.

Still love my ix, but the short time I have had my X50 has been impressive. Not part of this test, but my ix is a little stronger on KA band.

It is worth noting that after I did the test I had to send the X50 to Escort because I got a "service required" message but Larry is taking care of that for me and it is not enough right now to keep me from using it in the future.

I was glad to do it!

My wife on the other hand thinks I have lost my mind

Excellent work! I wish I had the time to drive around in circles and film my Escort 8500 compared to my Whistler XTR-690SE.

Good opportunity when the wife takes our daughter out for girl bonding time I can run around and play. She still thinks I'm crazy, but hey....

Don't expect this during football season!
