Folks, this is my first radar detector, ever. That's right. Raw meat. A 65 year old noob. So please...be gentle...I've got a LOT to learn.
But as a recently deflowered virgin my perspective adds a dimension for a large segment of the normal flow of other noobs coming in. Lot's of folks like me...maybe not as old, I mean, c'mon, get serious, but still, lot's of folks dipping their toes in for the first time.
So here:
Profound revelation #1: Having this unit (the Escort Passport coupled with EL) has NOT resulted in me speeding more...it has done the OPPOSITE. The "Over speed" warning reminding me to cool it, the myriad of "Warning, traffic camera ahead" alerts reminding me to be more aware, to look more closely at that "stale yellow" and make an intelligent decision rather than just gunning it and praying to a saint or two, and that's just the start. In other words, it has truly turned me into a SAFER, MORE AWARE DRIVER!
Profound revelation #1a: Escort Live! Don't leave home without it. Period.
Profound revelation #2: It ain't all biscuits 'n' gravy. You gotta get into the habit of properly stowing the equipment when stopped. If you don't, either the Florida sun (in my case) will melt the sucker or the fact that it's a "Steal Me!" sign sticking on your windshield will orchestrate a very bad day for you. No good will come from being lax in this...you MUST change your habits, you MUST treat it the same way you treat that expensive Garmin Zumo GPS on your scoot...STOW IT WHEN STOPPED!
Yes, that extremely includes "But I'm only going into the Wawa for just a second here...". Extremely. That's when it's very likely to grow legs resulting from a "smash 'n' dash". Remember, nobody "plans" to get ripped off. It happens when you DON'T expect it, not when you DO!
Just the same way you NEVER get a ticket if you EXPECT that cop...it's when you were daydreaming, letting that speed drift up while you were thinking about that presentation you are going to make when you get to your destination, not expecting it at all...THAT'S when you get a ticket!
And that's why RD equipment and peripherals are not necessarily there to encourage reckless, speed demon driving. I use it to keep me from drifting up to 43 when the speed limit plummets to 30 MPH on Bear Lake Road on my way home.
I use it to keep me safe and aware.
Ummm...okay, yeah, and to haul fanny when heading up to Jax on I-95, but that's a whole different subject matter. Or maybe not...
Ride safe,
CR
