Ku band radar in Australia
Hi Guys,
Below is a email that was recently forwarded to me from Beltronics... a customer enquiry that was directed to them:
"hi the only detector that is not detectable in australia is the sti driver.
police have woken up to this and are now useing KU band what is bel going to do is fix this problem
a lot of poeple have lost there detectors becauce of seaches on trucks. arther been pulled over for speeding, detector did not let them know they where deen shot
we need KU in sti driver is it possible
regards jason"
Trust me... not all Aussies have spelling and grammer skills like this guy, but obviously this required some digging into.
The ACMA (Australia Communications & Media Authority) says that Ku is not licensed for speed measuring devices yet we know of some users that have detectors with both K and Ka bands on and they are getting no detection.
My question is, has anyone heard anything similar to this? Has anyone ever hear of a department using non licensed equipment?
Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks
Scott

Sounds a lot like lidar, which is very hard to detect up in a truck cabin.
Any truck braking for I/O will win you a cabin search, that and stalcar units looking for cheap RD units at weigh bridge checkpoints.
I don't buy the Ku story.

Re: Ku band radar in Australia
Well this interesting. The ACMA and Australian Standards say that Ku band is NOT licensed or approved for Australian law enforcement, and the Ku band also belongs to a part of the spectrum that requires a Class License so it will be a no go for the everyday user too. I have not heard of it being used or tested in any state. As for the idea I guess it makes sense till Bel come up with Ku in the STI.
Ku band is widely used here for military satellite applications along with the upper part of the Ka band here.
If anyone hears of Aus using something new let me know.
Thanks.
