    Default 8500 False Laser Problem

I have done a search and read many posts on the problems related to the 8500 and false laser alerts. I still have a question or two for the pro's on this site.

I have been getting a constant false laser alarm at various locations over the past few months. I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherakee. The 8500 is about 2 to 3 years old and is powered with the cig lighter cord and has been since I got it The only thing I have done electricaly over the past few months is switch from XM radio to Sirius. I don't think that is the problem because the false laser happens when the Sat radio is on and off.

When I go to one local super market I almost always get a Self Calc when I turn my car back on. It goes throught the self calc for about 30 sec and then its back to normal. I don't know if this has caused any problems or not. I have Never gotten a "service required" message. .

What should I do? Send it back and get it repaired? I think they wanted $80 and mentioned something about checking filters. That price seems very high. Almost a third of the purchase price. I read a post where someone discribed how he soldered some of the wires inside the unit. I could do that but it sounds very dicy. If you mess up there is no way they would fix it then. Another post recommend adding capacitors but I don't know how to do that. I also don't know what Rev the unit is. Would that make a difference? I could check but how could you update it?

    Thanks for any help.

Does the grocery store you get the Self Cals at have radar door openers? I've read of some units throwing Self Cal if they're powered up with a strong signal nearby. The "fix" is to wait until you're away from the store before powering up the RD.

As for the laser falses, these are usually caused by electrical noise. Is there any pattern? Does it happen when you use a particular electrical accessory in your Jeep, such as the horn or wipers?

The capacitor thing is basically just adding a capacitor in parallel with the power plug (easiest place to do this is inside the lighter plug). I'm not sure what value cap to use though, but someone here might know.

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

The store does have radar door openers. Most stores in my area do, but this store always puts the unit in self Calc when I restart my car. Not on the way in but when I restart the car. If I don't turn my car off it does not go into self calc. I try to remember to turn off the unit when I drive in. But if I remember to turn it off I sometimes forget to turn it back on.

As for the false laser. It does not happen when I hit the horn or turn on the wipers. If there is any pattern it happens where other sources of radar might be. I can't be sure but I think in some areas where I use to get a false K or Ka alarm I am now getting a false Laser. I still get the usuall false K and Ka alarms but for years the Laser NEVER went off.
