my detector was running a self cal test for the first time since I've bought it that I know of. I didn't know what it meant so i turned it off. Is there anyway to make it do a self cal test, so I can see if iut's working correctly?

Soon you will be sending it in for service.Originally Posted by jwcalho

According to the Bel instruction manual, this is normal. The unit is simply performing a self-calibration. If you get the service required message, then it may be time to send it in. I wouldn't worry about it unless you notice problems. And I do not believe it is possible to force the unit to do a self-cal
A SelfCal test isn't that bad. If it reads SelfCal 3, you have a serious problem and must send it in.
Don't know how to force a Self-Cal on any Escort models.Originally Posted by jwcalho

Did you purcharse the RD new, how long have you owned your X50, is it hard-wired or not, and what revision is it. Additionally, approximately how many power cycles does it see a day. ( I am working on a theory which I have posted some time previously, that may or may-not have any validity)
In general, a Self-Cal may not be a bad thing, however popular opinion might indicate it's the kiss of death. IMHO, unless you receive these frequently, or receive a Service-Required, I would not be concerned.
I have encountered only two self-cal experiences over a 10 month period since owning my X50, each time I left it on while it completed, (takes ~ 30 seconds) and it re-calibrated it's self fine. On both occasions it was when I first powered the X50 on, never while just driving along.
I've had my X50 for well over a year now 1.5 (I think) and I have never gotten a self cal message.
I think they are a good sign however, it shows that there was something wrong with the tune, but the detector was able to recognize that and fix it itself. If you get a self cal, let it calibrate. If you don't get one again, then you can be assured that your detector is working properly.
Finaly sent mine in the other day for service.... When I get it back, it will be up for sale if anyone is interested.Originally Posted by CactusMan

I got ya beat. About 4 seconds, from plug in to 'self cal' and 2hrs to 'service required'.Originally Posted by jwcalho
