Extension with telephone cable

Have any of you hardwired using homemade cables? I have a lot of experience with telephone wiring and I was thinking about just make my own extension off the factory cigarette lighter so I can run the cable up and around the pillar without losing the smart mute button. I don't really have a problem with the adapter occupying my cigarette socket, I just don't like the cable going straight up (I have it mounted high).

Do any of you recommend this or should I buy the factory hardwire kit because it's made of higher quality wire? I don't want to lose performance or damage the detector using poor quality wire. Does anyone know what gauge and/or rating the factory wire is?

My buddy did it his radar still works so i think youll be ok....i dunno though ive always had a hardwire kit.

Heck... I use my V1 out, a 12foot phone cable, and use it on all 3 of my RJ-11 connection type RD's... (X50,V1,795), so you should be fine, just dont get bargain basement stuff.
