Default 8500 x50 blue or red? where to get it hardwired?

    Hey guys,

I'm pretty much sold on the Passport 8500 x50 after reading about it here.

Just a few concerns about which color to choose:

Which color would be best for bright days? (it get's really bright in the north when the sun reflects off the snow)

Which would be best when viewing through sunglasses?

And which would be best with a red backlight interior? (I figure red but my friend says blue, wondering what others think. It's going into a Audi A6.)

Also, does anyone know how much it would cost for a place like Best Buy to do the hardwire? (thinking I want it hardwired through the upper console)

I'd say that the blue actually does help visualization in brighter/direct-sunlight scenarios....

But at the same time, I am one of those who feel that the blue LEDs really "glare" at night. This, to me, is both a plus and a minus - the "glare" works to attract my undivided attention when alerting, but of course, it also is a distraction when driving at night.

Cosmetically? That's up to you. The blue probably won't match well, but I've got a vehicle with red backlighting as well, and the blue doesn't bother me much in terms of aesthetics, since it's so far removed from the main instrumentation (mine is mounted high, next to the interior RVM, to the left). With the red, if you're looking for an exact match, that may be difficult to achieve, but as a close approximation, it's not too, too far off any red/orange that's out there.

Can't help you much with the other issues. Sorry! ops:

just thought i'd pop in a few more questions:

    1) does the 8500 x50 from roy come just like if it'd come from escort... (travel case, smart cord, mount)?

    2) will the radar put a drain on my car battery now in the winter? this winter has already been pretty brutal to the battery... daily highs in the single digits, wind chills in the -30 to -20 range 24/7 for the last week.

Unfortunately, I can't help you on this one....I bought my x50 before I knew about Roy, so I went direct. Hopefully, one of the others here can help, or, alternatively, don't hesitate to ask him directly via e-mail or other methods of contact.

Possibly - but this is why you should direct wire (or ask for, with a professional install) to a "switched" source that turns on either via vehicle accessory power, or, even more preferably, engages after the vehicle is started.

In this manner, the detector will switch-off with your key, and will thus not prove to be a drain in "OMG I forgot it overnight" scenarios.

roy sells the same thing as Escort direct, its all in the same wrapped box, so if anything Roy could only give you MORE than Escort

get the color that either matches your car interior backlighting, or the one you just like better, theyre all the same on the inside save for the display of course

id hardwire high, because its easier for me to run it up an A-pillar and into the roof lining, than it is for me to run it through the lower dash and all the vents and s**t

    cool cool.

well i decided to go with the red. guess i'm just used to it and the blue would probably be a distraction, especially at night.

i put in my order a few moments ago for 2 day shipping; crosses fingers to get it by friday.

    thanks for the info people

DUDE just get the 9500i. I don't see why you would get anything else right now. It is worth the extra $.
