Well, my 9500i arrived this afternoon. I'm planning on posting my impressions of it in this thread over the next couple of days.
Out of the box:
The detector is definitely the largest and bulkiest detector I've ever used. On the bottom, there is an odd bulge (rather than a flat bottom) which I can only assume accommodates some of the additional circuitry needed by this detector. Stupidly, the serial number plaque is plastered right across the only usable area on the underside so dash mounting with any stability will require 3M Dual locking fasteners.
First Power On:
The detector's SirfStarIII gps unit acquires signals lightning fast. On my first poweron, the detector had a signal lock literally within 10 seconds. Subsequent times, the signal has been acquired as soon as the powerup cycle was complete. Very very impressive. In my car, the detector get powered as soon as I use my remote unlock to open the doors, so the detector has had a signal lock already before I even got in the car!!
I took the wife for a valentines day meal tonight... first drive with the 9500i. We passed one known K band false (non-leo hospital door opener). I picked this one up on the highway at roughly the same spot my rx65 and V1 always pick it up... so on this K band signal the performance looked good. I immediately marked it as a false. The device gave a loud and clear confirmation.
Then I picked up a few other random falses around town and immediately noticed my first annoyance with the default settings. By default, when a new signal is picked up... you will get a beep followed by the lady's voice telling you the band. On the display during the first 5-10 seconds of the alert you'll see your current speed. This bothers me... I KNOW my speed. I want to see the ExpertMeter. Well this is an easily resolved issue. I've since turned the "Speed Alert" feature off.
Tomorrow I'll test the detector in my local area "False Alley" and also hopefully run into some LEOs running radar. Because of the terrible weather tonight nobody was going near the speed limit, thus no cops were shooting radar tonight.
More from me tomorrow....
