1. ## In-Depth Retest Vs K band Radar speed sign.

Well folks after yesterday's test against the K band speed sign, I decided to give it another go today. This time taking careful notes and comparing the V1 and the 9500i.

Let me describe the scene. Its 9:00pm on a 2 lane divided highway. No traffic ahead of me for all tests. I stick to the PSL of 55mph for all tests as well. The road curves slightly to the right about 1 mile from the K band construction sign and then straightens out.

Somewhere off in the distance I'm getting KA signals from cops taking instant on someplace else (I'm not interested in him for now).

I did two runs, one with the 9500i turned on and mounted mid-windshield. The second with the V1 turned on and mounted mid windshield. I did not test them on at the same time.

The V1 was run in big L mode. The 9500i was run in H mode.

-----------------------------------

On approach: In this situation, I'm approaching the K band speed sign and heading straight into the radar. The radar is shooting straight at my car and I'm approaching it.

9500i = .8 Miles Before first K band alert
V1 = 1.5 miles before first K band alert

--------------------------------------

Next scenario... I passed the speed sign by about a mile and decided to head the other way. Essentially, the speed sign pointing it's radar in the same direction i'm traveling in. This scenario simulates a cop hiding under a bridge shooting cars in the rear.

9500i = .1 mile first K band warning
V1 = .4 mile first K band warning.

-----------------------------------------

Final scenario. Once I pass the speed sign... I measured how long the detectors could hold onto a signal hitting them in the rear. This might simulate a K band cop using moving radar from behind me.

9500i = 0 (Initially Zero alert to rear) then at .4 to .9 miles I had a K band alert.

V1 = 1.1 to 1.3 (Initially the V1 was going nuts till I was 1.1 miles from the source, then it died down only to blip briefly again at 1.3 miles from source).

------------------------------------------

Its no surprise that the V1 kicks butt in rear detection, but what worries me is the lack of frontal K band range when approaching radar either shooting @ me or away from me.

Wow, thx for the test lordhamster.

3. You should have run the V1 in small l to be fair against the 9500 in H mode.

No. Should be A mode on the V1 not small L.

5. I've noticed this early on with both RD's on - not the proper way but you can tell after numerous encounters specially when consistent. The V1 always alerts K band first.

X2 The V1 looses 0.2 miles on K band using a logic mode.

7. I was trying to be reasonable. This is a real-world test so I ran the detectors in Real world urban modes. I've tried to run the V1 in A mode but it drives me nucking futs. I always run it in L mode. To be fair the the new detector on the block, I let it run in it's most sensitive mode.

I'm not trying to compare the V1 and 9500 per se... I'm just trying to see if the 9500 performs rougly on par with it... and if it has any blind spots.

Like I said before I'm willing to accept a bit of reduced range from the 9500i provided that the alerts are still early enough. What worries me though is the near complete blindness I'm seeing to signals that aren't directed straight into the horn.

When I tried the X50 it did this very same thing, are you saying that your X50 does not do this?

I didn't test the x50.

Oh yeah... that reminds me... one critical thing I forgot to mention.

On approach to the K band sign on the first run, I was hit by a distant KA band signal. After this the K band signal disappeared from the expert meter for about .3 miles. Despite the fact it was constant on and I could see nothing was blocking the line of sight between me and the radar.

Sure the x50 and the rx65 don't have as good rear detection, but they never exhibited complete and total blindness.

10. Lordhamster thanks for taking the time to do this. It is contributing members like yourself that can makes this forum so good
