I bought a new 8500 X50 rev 6.1. in January. I loved it because it was soooo quiet. However.....
Today I approached a K band permanent speed warning sign (displays your speed as you approach and warns you to slow down, etc.) which in the past always caused my X50 to go to full alert about 2 blocks from the sign. After passing it, my X50 would alert for a few hundred feet. All good and normal....
BUT, today I drove by it and my X50 remained silent, even after I passed it. I was surprised, so I turned around and ran by the sign again - NO ALERT but the X50 looked like it was doing its job. It had powered up less than 5 minutes ago, went through its initialize cycle and settled in on AUTO as usual. No Self Cal, etc. All sounds were normal.
Now, my X50 has always been set to AUTO, POP ON, MID Brightness - no other custom settings. Then I thought about the other day when I passed two troopers sitting in the Xway median and I got no alert. Later, I passed a couple of motormen and no alerts. Too quiet, now that I think back....
So, I do the 3-button reset, power off and on, no error messages and go back through the speed sign again and....Voila! My X50 works like it should.
Except, now I don't trust it anymore. It went silent in a known hot zone and stayed silent until I did a reset and power cycle. As I thought back, it's been TOO QUIET since I bought it. I live in Orlando and there's LOTS of enforcement not to mention door openers, etc.
Strange thing is when it works the range is astounding - 5 miles or more for K, Ka.
But, I don't trust it anymore and want to get rid of it. So, these are my questions:
1) Has anyone else run into this intermittent silent malfunction with no error message from the X50?
2) Does anyone have any idea why a reset cured the immediate silence?
3) Shouldn't there have been an error message of some sort for this type of catastrophic malfunction?
Any help, suggestions or ideas will be appreciated.
