Is there a way to use the GPS reciever in the 9500i for an alternate purpose? Ex hook it to your laptop and use it as an locator for Streets&Trips?

Too early to say just what is going to become of that USB port.
Only Escort knows - and they ain't saying much.
They sure brag about it but it's time for them to put up, or just shut up and supply owners with a plug if it's not going to be used.
I don't think they will use it, and if they do it won't be for a whole lot of use. I believe you'll be able to use it for firmware updates - but beyond that - I think you'll need some hacking to get in to use the GPS and sorts.Originally Posted by statusquo
this may sound a little far-fetched but in the near future it might not be so hard to believe... if its broadcasting a signal to a gps sat, could the cops pick up some of those packets with a packetsniffer or some type of scanner? and figure out who you are and where you've been and how fast you were driving(or if you outrun them like some people i know on motorcycles, would the cops just find you with your gps?)? . i'm pretty sure it uses gps to calculate speed, though the accuracy of that process is questionable. i don't know what information if any is being broacasted all over the place, or if its encrypted, or how its sent because i don't own a gps(for some of these reasons). i'd assume it sends things over gprs, maybe edge or ev-do to cell towers that relay to the satellites, or maybe a wide area 802.11x LAN somehow, but that doesnt seem right. let me know any info on this stuff and i'll figure out weird theories that could be exploited...or if you have real answers about how it works, thats always helpful. thanks
Hi dranian,
The GPS in the unit is just a GPS receiver, the same thing as a common GPS unit that one would use to get directions in a car (e.g. Garmin Nuvi). No information is sent from your 9500 to a satellite or to anything for that matter. I think you might be confused with GPS trackers that people can put on their car. What this is is a GPS receiver (like the one in the 9500) AND some sort of transponder or cellular card which sends you coordinates that it gets from the GPS to a server somewhere.
So don't worry, you won't be tracker by the GPS in the 9500.
well i was a little confused, cuz i havent seen detailed specs and dont know hot it works yet since i dont have one to mess with. I know it is possible to track certain garmin models if you know enough about them. i'm also aware that the cops arent likely to be ready or capable of tracking with gps anytime soon.Originally Posted by licamell
so, i'm not really confusing it with a gps tracker except that in a sense all gps recievers that send or recieve information could be used to track you if you can lock onto the frequency. you would need the persons consent usually so you'd know what signal they're broadcasting on, but if police wated to try pracketsniffing and decryption, they might get something useful...i wanna learn more before i'd buy one. i'm very hesitant to get gps stuff cuz i think i'll have to throw it away if i'm involved in a pursuit. which isn't likely for me right now, but i know some other people who could use the info too. maybe i should just buy 1 and put it on a friends bike and tell him go ride circles around the cop and then outrun him...might make for an interesting video but it isnt really a quality test of the hardware
i saw an expiremint done where they were tracking 1 guy, with consent, and they watched him for a while just to show that you can be tracked with a normal gps. then they turned off the filter and it showed every garmin in the LA area crawling around on the screen and impossible to keep track of.
i could probably call escort and get more details about how and if it relays info...maybe later
Simply tuck the GPS under your tin foil hat, should any police chase ensue, and you will be un-trackable.
All I would say is "Not me, must have been another 9500 user"Originally Posted by dranian
If the police officer says differently. just say "Prove it"
Anything capable of transmitting to a GPS satellite is going to look quite a bit different than a little plastic black rectangular box sitting behind a windshield. It is simply a SIRFstar III receiver - same thing as used in the top of the line GPS units by Garmin and Magellan etc.Originally Posted by dranian

A GPS receiver calculates its position by measuring the distance between itself and three or more GPS satellites. Measuring the time delay between transmission and reception of each GPS radio signal gives the distance to each satellite, since the signal travels at a known speed. The signals also carry information about the satellites' location. By determining the position of, and distance to, at least three satellites, the receiver can compute its position using trilateration.[2] Receivers typically do not have perfectly accurate clocks and therefore track one or more additional satellites to correct the receiver's clock error.
good enough repsonses, i might just upgrade from my x50
