Default E-mailed Escort about 9500i TrueLock problem

Here is what I e-mailed Escort.

    To Whom It May Concern:

I bought the 9500i on Friday May 18th. I have not used it much yet as I did not drive much this past weekend. I owned a Beltronics V995 and I was very happy with its performance. However I sold it to buy the 9500i because of the TrueLock filter option. That is the primary reason why I bought this detector. After talking to a few people who owned this I found out that there is a performance issue with the TrueLock. I have used it a couple times so far by a shopping center by my house. From watching the TrueLock demos and advertisements on your site the 9500i is supposed to block the frequency of the false signal (automatic doors) and still be able to pick up a police officer shooting radar at the some location on the same band since the radar gun is on a different frequency than the false. From what I have seen the 9500i actually blocks out the entire radar band that the false is on. This is a major issue to me and I am sure other customers as well and is not what the 9500i is supposed to do and not what I paid for . I bought this at Best Buy for $450. I was hesitant about putting out that much money for a radar detector but I made the decision to as I know Escort makes great radar detectors. However I have 11 days to return this to Best Buy for a refund, but I would have to pay a 15% restocking fee. I know this detector is upgradeable via the USB port on the side of the detector. Will there be a firmware update to correct this issue with the TrueLock? If so when? And where do I get the cable and software to do it? I have thought about returning this tomorrow but I thought I would e-mail someone who can tell me if this issue will be corrected soon? I am nervous now and do not feel as confident when I drive by a marked location knowing that it is blocking out the entire band that the signal is coming from. Thank you for your time and I hope this can be corrected within the next week so I do not have to return this.

Here is the response from Escort:

It is good to hear from you! There is a lot of good information on the web and there is also a lot of misinformation. sometimes it is hard to know which is which! This is difficult to cover via e-mail, but I will try. I have seen videos on-line that show various possibilities, varying non-"real world" situations, etc. The situation you mention is not a real world concern. If there is a constant K-band alert from a grocery or convenience store (for example) the police can not use the same band in that location. If they were to try, they would get reflections back from other cars, trucks etc. that originated from the automatic door-opener. There is no way for the officer to know if he is receiving a signal from the target vehicle or a reflection from the source of the false signal.
A real world police trap requires the officer to use a different band of radar (or to use laser) if there is a source of other radar in the area.
X and K-band are fixed frequencies. There is some allowance, or play in the specific frequencies authorized by the FCC used for traffic radar and other motion sensors that will get reported as alerts by a radar detector. The 9500i blocks out all bands that are present in the specific area at the time the driver Blocks the Location. This is not a "problem" with the design of the 9500i, and will not be "fixed" in later releases.
We are still developing the software features for the 9500i, and this has not been released. I do not have an estimate for completion, but the cable and software should be available soon. Customers that purchase factory direct will receive information as soon as this is available.

I know this is confusing and I hope that helps.
Thank you for your interest in Escort!

This was my reply back to Escort:

I am just worried that if a lockout an area that is a false I will also not be able to pick up the police radar. I understand if an automatic door operated on the x band and a police officer was operating a ka gun there would not be a problem. But lets say the automatic door is on the k band at 24.123 and the police officer’s k band gun who is in the same vicinity shoots at 24.155 it will block that signal as well and it will not pick up the police radar either. According to your website, the whole purpose of the TrueLock feature is to block out the exact frequency of the false and still be able to pick up a different frequency that is on the same band shot by police radar. Are you saying this will not be fixed with a firmware update? It would make a lot of sense to me and I’m sure many others if there is software created to change the threshold of the frequency range. In other words that when you mark the location as a false instead of blocking out all the bands it will only block out the one frequency that was stored in the memory. This is why I really bought the detector. Its been a bit misleading and confusing. But I believe if software and a firmware update corrected that to block out the one frequency only, these radar detectors would be selling like crazy and it would be the ultimate radar detector created by any company.

What do I do with this thing? I'm starting to think I should have kept my Bel V995. That thing was great.

Return the 9500i and get a new V995. Chalk it up to doing some testing and gaining some experience with another unit.

The only reason I would consider the V1 is for the rear antenna. Can you tell a major difference with the rear antenna?

yes. Big time. And the arrows pointing exactly where the guy is at is totally worth the price of admission in my book.

It is SO nice to see what the biggest alert is and the direction it's in.

If I were to do it again, I would have not purchased the X50 and went straight to the V1

How is the Sti vs the new V995 performance wise? I know the Sti is immune to detection but that isnt really an issue for me.

I have returned my 9500i and replaced it with the V1.

I might have a bit more noise in my truck, but I do feel I am much more protected -- and lets face it, that is the purpose of a RD, is it not.

i can't believe they'd blow smoke up your a$$ like that; you CAN IN FACT use radar underneath an automatic door. I sat in th eonly parking lot in town that gives me k-band alerts and shotmy golden eagle at parking lot traffic near the door opener. It had no problems; i even got close enough thtat my rx65 was full-alert k-band and the GE just chugged right along; facing it facing away didnt matter...........

That really sucks that escort pretty much doesn't give one sh1t about trueloc; i really hope it bites them in the a$$ soon. You'd think they'd get the idea after so many peole have returned the 9500i because it sucks.
