Default HELP X50 Continual "Service Required" 4th Unit!!

Hello everyone. I stumbled across these forums in a desperate attempt to research this issue with my passport 8500 x50. Brief history....

Purchased from Best Buy in Oct 04. Unit started doing self calibrations after a few weeks. Then started displaying "Service Required messages." Took it back to best buy and did an exchange for a new smart cable and unit. Worked for about another month or so and started with the same behavior. Took it back to best buy and did another exchange under manufactor warranty. Took my 3rd unit home started using it and after about 2 months same issue. Started doing self calibrations and then service required messages. 3 weeks ago I took it back to Best Buy and did my 4th YES FOURTH exchange. My forth unit has worked for about 3 weeks now until a few days ago it did a couple self calibrations and now it is saying service required "most of the time" after about 2 minutes of operation. I just don't understant this.... I have called Escort about this numerous times. Each time they say there sorry and that it is defective and I should try and get an exchange at Best Buy.

Well Best Buy won't exchange this unit anymore. I've only owned it for 9 months and had 4 different units all with the same issue. Suffice it to say my confidence is shattered in the quality of this product. It works AWESOME when it works.... Extremely accurate but the quality seems to be exremely poor.

I'm not sure what to do now. I have a 4th broken unit still under manufactor warranty. I don't want to continually have to get replacements from Escort and with my luck I will send it to then, get it back and then it will break again right after the 1 year warranty is up from the original purchase date. I wonder if I could use my most recent exchange receipt for purchase confirmation and get my 1 year warrant extended to 1 year from my last exchange 3 weeks ago....

Anyone else have these issues? I am really upset over this. I spent a lot of money and time on this unit to have it continually go bad. I take perfect care of this expensive piece of equipment. None of the units have ever been dropped. Car is a brand new 2004 Hyundai Tiburon garage kept. I live in Wisconsin so I don't really have extreme temperatures???

Any suggestions or opinions from anyone here??? Right now I have a call in to escort customer service. They said to leave a voicemail with "Chad" who is there "teckie" guy and he will call me back. Apparently he doesn't work wed and thurs.... Sounds kind of scarie that this company has one lone tech staff???

It sounds like you may have a problem with getting power from your car. The electrical system in the car may be the real culprit here. To avoid trouble I always remove the detector's power supply when starting or turning the car off. Some users even use an inline filter to avoid problems.

Another possibility is that the detector is bouncing around a lot on the windshield or getting extremely overheated. This could cause a lot of mechanical wear and tear. You should also not be leaving the detector in direct sunlight to avoid heat and thieves.

That does not sound like the quality products Escort provide. It has to be your car

Is it direct wired or plugged into the cigarette lighter? Could it be the voltage of your car that is doing it? Try another car if available and see if it happens then. If it does not and you use the cigarette adapter get a direct wire cord and see if it continues to happen. I just got my x50 back from their so called customer service and one thing is for certain. One day over a year old and it will cost you $49.95 for them to take it out of the box. Then they will call you and tell you you have to prepay for any repairs. If you wait over a month they will send it back to you not repaired. Customer service with Escort cannot tell you anything about your detector (is the software being updated and if so what revision are you getting, what else is being done to it, etc.) I asked to speak to a technician to get some answers and the rep told me no one was willing to come to the phone. I don't know what to tell you, but get it back to Escort before the year is up and get it fixed and ebay it might be your best bet. I love mine, but their customer service is horrible. Look at a V1 maybe. You have to have your proof of purchase or don't bother sending it in. Good Luck! Glockman30

I'm with everyone else here, seems like there's something goofy with your electrical. Tons of X50's being sold and used with no problems. If you've had that many go bad, next logical choice is your car.

Thanks for responding guys. Quick question. I was told by escort that the smart cord(plugged in to the cigarette lighter) regulates voltage.

If by some fluke of nature the power from the cigarrette lighter on my *new* car is faulty could it be BREAKING the passport 8500 or tricking the passport 8500 in to thinking it is broken?

As a test I am going to give the whole unit to my girlfriend who lives with me and have her use it for a week in her 2005 Toyota Corolla and see if it gives her any error messages.

Also where do I get a direct cable for power? Will that really make a difference? HOW CAN I TEST MY CIGARRETTE LIGHTER TO MAKE SURE IT IS PROPERLY FUNCTIONING AND DISTRIBUTING CORRECT VOLTAGE OVER TIME. I would like to take this to Hyundai since my car is new and under warranty but they will probably just shooo me away if I explain the situation.

You can get the smart cord here:

Lots of other cool stuff there, too. Let us know what happens when the RD is in your girlfriend's car. Hopefully it's not messed up.

    dborden,

I know exactly how you feel. It took 3 X50's before I got one that wasn't defective. And I sent one of them in 3 times for service and it was still a POS!!!!!

Call Escort Radar and ask for Michael Kennedy(They might not want to transfer you to him) explain to him what has happened. He should be able to replace your X50 with one that WORKS.

I have not heard of the X 50 doing this but its a big concern espically when you spend that much on a detector let us know how it does in your girlfriends car. Has this same thing happened with the Rx 65?? Don't want to order the Rx 65 if it does any insight would be appreciated.

I'd say it's one of two things 1) somethings wrong with your electrical system 2) you ralley your car and the thing is getting smashed aginst the windshield
