Is my 8500 broken?

Hi, I just bought a used 8500, and it seems to be behaving strangely. Every few minutes it will instantaneously go to full alert on K band, then just as quickly go back to nil. Seemingly no ramp up, no ramp down. Does it on all modes, so far always on freq 24.150. Reset the unit, no change. Other than this, it seems to function normally. I've been out of the radar detector "scene" for a few years, and I was wondering if this is normal behaviour. In the old days, I only saw something like this if I got hit with instant-on rader, and even then the alert would last longer and sometimes trail off. I really doubt there are radar sources in some of the places it's gone off. Any advice is appreciated.
