    Default Passport 8500 X50 Sensitivity

    Hey all,

Just got the new passport 8500 x50 and have only had a chance to see it in action in the city...plus it's my first radar detector ever. I was just curious how early others were receiving detection in the city...ie, around corners, over hills, on striaghtaways. On a couple occasions, I've noticed that I get a detection right before I come around a corner and have to adjust my speed accordingly. Once I round the corner, the cop is a ways down the road but still in sight. This happened to me on the same road while going in the other direction but the cop was in motion going the other direction. Just before I rounded the corner, I got a reading, then, about 5-10 seconds later, bam, cop! Just thought it might be nice to get some input from some other X50 owners to make sure I don't have a faulty RD.

And yes, I do understand that I won't get a reading if the police radar isn't on. Are there any police radars out there that are instant-on that don't require the police officer to turn the unit on. In other words, is there a radar detector out there that will take the speed of every passing car and turn off (undetectable to our RD's) when no cars are passing?

Yeah, saw the vid but it's on the highway which I know is much more sensitive. I spend most of my time in the city so just curious about its capabilities there. Anyone?

just keep trying it out u will see what false is in ur area ect...

Thanks, but I'm not concerned about the falses, I just want to make sure that I'm being "informed" as early as I'm supposed to be that a cop is running radar around the corner. That's what I mean by sensitivity...Am I being told early enough?

What band is your city using? My city uses K and usually I get at LEAST a 30 second warning before I see a cop. One time it was going off for like 2 minutes and I thought he was behind me it gave me such an early warning.

Detection around corners is always pretty short. It also depends on buildings and other solid objects to reflect signal. I'd say that the warnings you are getting are about where they should be.

i, too, just got my X50 today i'm extrememly impressed with what i've seen so far. it doesnt pick up the "junk" that my Cobra did, & i had the opportunity to do a half-ass field test w/ one of those "This Is Your Speed" things...well, as you all may know, the X50 provided infinitely better detection. i even got the signal from about 1/4 mi. around a corner...also, the LOUD tone is awesome! stereo volume all the way up, windows down @ 70, heard the K band loud & clear 8)

eh, most of you guys know how well this thing works, i'm just excited about it :P

i DO have 1 question: what's the best way to hard-wire this thing? my Cobra had PWR to the wipers fuse...i've never had any problems (i think) from tapping that source. do ya think it would be okay to tap the same fuse with my X50? i know that i'll just be able to use a phone cord, which i think will make it MUCH easier...tia!

I would tap into the cig lighter circuit... But if the one you used had enough juice to run the Cobra I doubt the X50 will overload it.

Whatever circuit used for the Cobra would be able to run it. Power draw with radar detectors is a non-issue, you can tap them in anywhere. Even the V1 with all it's fancy lights and dual antennas draws a mere 450mA at maximum alert conditions. No power drain to speak of.
