Placement should be high and center on your windshield. However, don't go too nuts because you need to be able to see it.Originally Posted by oman0123

What are the benefits of hardwiring it?
Hi oman0123, welcome to the board.
The benefits of hardwiring a radar detector is to help keep thieves away and gives it a cleaner install by not having a coiled cord plugged through your cigarette lighter running up to your windshield. A lot of people like to mount it high so it's less obvious to others that they have a radar and it's better for picking up radar, but not for laser necessarily.
I don't think you're supposed to mount the 9500i too high to your car's ceiling since it still needs to have a clear view above it for the GPS functionality but I'm not too sure about that. I learned this from watching this how to hardwire your radar detector from radar roy. You may want to check this out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twC5pCQYC90
Also if you have any more questions the search function is a very powerful tool. I just got an X50 and plan on hardwiring it as soon as my direct wire smartcord comes in from Escort. Just by reading from other posts, I think I have an idea of how to do it, but then again I'm also not too confident in err my wiring abilities.
Hope this helps.
where can i purchase a hardwire cord/kit or whatever comes with it? id rather not buy online if i can avoid it.
