Well, to all you experts with your laser theories as to WHY the X50's may sometimes not alert, I offer you my tale of woe:
In December, 2006 I bought a brand new, shrink-wrapped-from-the-factory X50 v6.1 and after two weeks, I noticed it would sometimes pass every LEO in the area SILENTLY. (Yes, I know it's not a cop detector so please no reminders.)
So, I check it out against several local radar speed signs and it FAILS TO ALERT! The details are that on some powerups, it would work beautifully, alerting from thousands of feet away. On others, it would be quiet as a churchmouse on the same test runs.
This is proof to me that the detector was defective! Back to the store - they replaced it because it was only 13 days old. The replacement, a whole 50,000 serial numbers newer, was fine for about a week and then started to fail to alert, just like the original one (same test runs).
So I persuade the store manager to replace it with a THIRD brand new unit. I loved this one until a month ago when, at powerup, it started lighting up to 100% alerts in my garage on Ka and X band! What the hell...
So, I run through my test area and on repeated powerups it FAILS TO ALERT 4 out of 10 times.
Before any conspiracy theorists ask, Yes, I use the factory recommended low unobstructed mount, 100% factory supplied cord & mounting hardware; tested the units in my 2007 Explorer AND my 2005 Maxima; and no, I do not live within a military-industrial radar farm that's zapping my units with disabling radar pulses!
Nobody will ever convince me that Passport doesn't have a design problem with these X50's. Whatever criteria they are using for final testing at the factory is deficient. You can't have three brand new retail store X50's from three different serial number runs doing the SAME thing over six months unless there's a design/manufacturing/testing problem.
I'd like to hear what Escort has to say but I haven't yet wasted my time on the phone with a bunch of technologically-challenged canned-script reading customer service reps. I'd rather hear what some of you geniuses have to say first.
This forum is much more entertaining AND enlightening AND probably much more accurate and correct....
