Looking to buy an x50, so how do you tell if it is a 6.1/6.3 or a rev 5?

You still looking to buy a X50? You posted in the Valentine forum about getting a returned unit for $40 less.

Regardless the way you tell if you are getting a rev 5 vs a rev 6.1 and later is the FCC ID. Rev 5's will have the FCC ID of QKL8500 and the 6.1 and laters have an FCC ID of QKLX5M4.

I'm not too sure if a X50 with a FCC ID of QKL8500 will be guaranteed to be a Rev 5. There are people on this board who have Rev 3 X50's and I have no idea how to identify those. But for the most part I think most of the X50's out there with QKL8500 should be Rev 5.

I have a rev 5 and a rev 3 and you can not tell from the box, just know it will not be a 6.1 6.3

alright thanks, yeah it just seemed that an x50 might be a little cheaper and more on my budget. i live in rochester, NY and i need it to get back and forth from college and home.

Should I just go to Best Buy and purchase an x50? I just want a detector that has good range and can detect around corners/hills.

Are the Rev.5 versions honestly better than the 6.1/6.3 versions? I got a 6.3 for my wife and it alerts about identical to my original 8500 (whch is also QKL8500). I don't recall ever seeing any test pitting the 5 against the 6.1 but I can say that I have seen online tests in which performance of x50s and non x50s vary wildly enough (even across the same platform) that any differences could be attributed to manufacturers tolerances more than anything.

Even so, none of the online comparisons really indicate that any version of the 8500 is so much worse that it wouldn't give you ample time to react to a threat. I know that barring lase, my original 8500 has always given me PLENTY of warning. LEOs mostly use Ka down here in FL though, so my experience is pretty much limited to that (most are 34.700).

From my understanding the Rev 5 is better on K band.
The Rev 5 also seems to have more POP falses than
the Rev 6. Honestly I have my POP band turned off
so that doesn't really affect me. Not many states use
POP and if they do, they can't issue a ticket with it
anyway. I'll still get a reading when they flit to normal
mode. It's just like Instant on anyways.

You'll be pressed to find any new Rev 5's.
I'm running a rev 5 and it does the job nicely.

If I were you I would purchase from Roy, the person who runs this forum. You can buy from him from radarbusters.com and he will take care of you.

However, if you don't feel like waiting for shipping, you could just pick one up from Best Buy, although I think then you have to pay sales tax which is a pain in the butt.

Personally, I would buy from Roy or directly from Escort.

Well when I was deciding whether to purchase a new X50 or a Rev 5 X50, a lot of the people on the forum recommended the Rev 5. Plus, the 6.1 design is made with cheaper parts than the Rev 5's in order to cut down manufacturing costs.

As for which one is better, the only test out there comparing a Rev 5 X50 vs a 6.1 X50 is the off axis test, which compares the X50 with the S7 horn (Rev 5), and the 9500i horn with the M4 horn which is also used in 6.1/6.3 X50's. Granted they didn't use a X50 with a M4 horn, but it should be the same as the 9500i's. From the results it looks as if the S7 horn design on the Rev 5 X50 is better than the M4 horn design.

Alright, thanks guys. I went to Best Buy today and looked at the x50's and the red ones are about 310. I could really care less about what color it is.
