Default New 8500 X50 Power Cord Questions

Just received a new 8500 X50, seems to work great, (Not my first radar detector) I would like to hard wire it in, don't mean to sound cheap, but is there an alternative to buying a $30.00 cable from Escort?

It looks like a standard RJ11 connector, the color code seems to be straight forward, red 12V+ Black =Ground. Has anyone attempted to make their own connectors? Is there a more reasonable source than Escort?

    Thanks
    Bill

It should be pretty simple if you know which pin is supposed to be hot and which is supposed to be ground. (I'm sure someone here knows, or else you can test with a multimeter.) You can use a standard phone cord. My only recommendation is that you add an in-line fuse, 1A ought to do it. A little solder and heat-shrink tubing and you're good to go.

I have a better idea, why risk making your own cord and doing something wrong, Bel/Escort sells a direct wire with out the led module for 10 bucks, I would just buy that. Why ruin a 300 dollar detector for a a few bucks, doesn't make sense.

That's what I was looking for. Don't know how I missed it.

I just bought 2 of those direct wires for $10, one for each car. Just to let you know they rip you $5 for "shipping" so it ends up costing $15

I would spend the extra cash and get the smart cord. Trust me,
once you get the other one installed your going to wish you had
    purchased the smart cord.

I found that pushing the mute button on the detector would
increase the chances of it falling from the windshield. with the
Smart cord you never have to touch the detector to mute it.
