    Default X50 Spec Display Observations

So while I was traveling from Austin to Houston I left the X50 on Spec display because I was tired of getting random Ka band blips.

On my trip I faced 3 Ka alerts. The first two lasted only a 2-3 seconds and were weak signals that displayed Ka 33.5xx and the other Ka 35.3xx. I'm assuming these were from Cobras of some sort? What else would cause the X50 to alert these frequencies? The frequencies used by LEOs are 33.8, 34.7, and 35.5 right? So if it's off by 0.2 can I assume it's not coming from a cop?

The last Ka alert was a somewhat hidden LEO. The Spec displayed it as 34.6xx. It gave me a good 2-3 seconds to slow down as I was going 80 in a 70 before I saw the LEO. I think it was running constant Ka but not for sure since I muted it. I didn't get a strong Ka alert from the start so I'm assuming it was constant on. I wasn't too impressed with the X50's range though. Plus I couldn't tell how strong of a signal it was since I muted the alert since my passenger was sleeping.

All in all I saw a lot of cops today...about 3 that already had pulled someone over. I forgot that it was the end of the month and that cops needed to meet their quota until my passenger pointed it out.

Cobra's usually alert much lower in the Ka range.

I sort of made up my numbers with my X50's spec mode to be +/- 25 on the last 2 digits from 35.500, 34.700 and 33.800. For some reason, my X50 gives me very close numbers although most radar units are stable with +/- 100hz. Here are some examples - Kustom/decatur 35.478 or 35.510, stalkers 34.724 or 34.697, MPH 33.804 or 33.787) Numbers can vary here and if it is close enough to 35.5, 34.7 and 33.8, slow down. Some radar detectors can still leak frequencies very close to the 3 main Ka radar frequencies and your next step to do is watch for the audio ramp up if it is getting stronger and longer. The X50 has the best audio ramp up in the industry in my opinion.

    Thanks for the info guys.

Unfortunately, on my trip back to Austin I will be running my newly acquired 3.813 V1.

Too bad that doesn't have spec display.

Stay tuned. when my SR7 gets back from tuning I'm going to try running my V1 and SR7 together. I bench tested it and there didn't seem to be problem but I'm going to take them out on the road for six weeks and video the results.

During my bench test I caught a HCSD running CO ka 35.500 and the V1 was showing side arrows. Sure enough there was a HCSD Impala in the cross traffic. So that time I had the best of both worlds.

We'll see if it works in everyday action. For the record though. The SR7 reciever will be in the grill not right next to the V1 like a X50 would have to be set up.

I tend to find falses from Cobras, seem to scare the heck out of me, not just gradual blips. Also, the Tech mode is fairly accurate in freq. it is off a little but close. You also have to take into account that the radar guns are not always "in tune" so they will not be perfect anyway. Basically with Ka it should always be considered a threat and slow down.

this will probably sound dumb and off-topic but this thread deals with freqeuncies, how(can i?) do i get my detector to show me the freqeuncy

If you are running a X50 you have to change it its programming mode. I believe you press the City and Dim buttons together to get into programming mode and then scroll through until you get to Meter option. I think the option you want to change is Meter SPC to display frequencies. Meter STD is the standard bar display and Meter EXP is the Expert meter where it can track 2 Ka 2 K and 4 X bands.

Hope this was right...I don't have the X50 right in front of me so I'm not entirely sure.

    Cheers.

It's another brand of radar detector that you want to avoid all together.
