Default Laser Alert on the 9500i

Ok, I confess. At first I was a little leary of my 9500i when I bought it in
August. Even more so after reading so many of the negative responses
concerning the Ramp-Up and the True-Lock feature. It almost seemed
for a minute that I was looking for almost any reason NOT to like it so I
could return it for a full refund. Well let me tell you, the more I drive with
this thing, the more I'm falling in love with it.

Yes, the Ramp-up is not as good as on my X-50 but oh well, what can I
do. Thanks to you guys here and all the info that you provided on
True-Lock, I am more comfortable and more selective when locking out
a particular location and it makes for my drive around the city a very
very quiet expereince. My 9500 so far has 5 saves and they all were on
the Interstate with the Illinois State LEOS shooting Ka radar. In all 5
cases there was really no Ramp Up noted but I've trained myself to
immediatly slow down if my 9500 goes off so that seems to work for me.

Now on to my Laser Expereince. I live in a University town where other
than the State LEOs the only other LEOS to have Laser Radar is the
University LEOS. In Illinois, the University LEOS are actually trained
at the State Police Academy and have all the rights and privaleges that
    State Troopers have here.

Keeping that in mind, my 9500 has picked up a Laser Alert twice. The 1st encounter, the University LEO was comming toward me about 1/2 mile away, and I think that he was playing with the Laser radar, so the
9500 picked it up...cool, no problem. The 2nd encounter was today,
about 1 hour ago. I was at a redlight 4-way intersection and it went off
telling me I had a Laser Alert. I'm looking all around like
WTF?? I didnt see any LEOS anywhere in eyesight and even if I had
they dont really shoot Laser here in the city.

Could something else be setting off my Laser Alert on my detector??

Also, I want to thank you guys for all the great information on this site
Man, This is almost like have a Radar Detector Class Online.........

Infinity tailights will set off a laser alert, and I doubt an LEO driving toward you would set it off. They have to be stationary in order to run laser. Could have been another Infinity driving around near the LEO that time as well. They both sound like falses, but at least the ramp up works on Laser :P

For the first encounter, there is the possibility that the LEO was just playing around trying to see if he could get your speed (it's harder than it seems :? ). Or, it could have been the rising or setting sun (had that happen once), an Infinity (never had one set my X50 off), or someone's LED taillights.

For the second encounter, my guess is the red light did it. Was it one of the newer LED type?

Yeah.....I have been reading that those Infinity tail-lights were setting off
detectors. What is it in the tail-light? Is it the LEDs in the tail-light or
is it something to do with that back-up camera system thats there?

I can't remember if an Infinity car/SUV was in the area but I do know that
the redlight intersection I was stopped at is a newer one and probably has those new LEDs in the lights. But if that was the case, wouldnt I get a Laser Alert evrytime Im at that particular light? I have stopped at that light numerous times and as far as I can remember, this is the first time that I have gotten a Laser Alert there.

I too was almost brainwashed that the 9500I was a poor performer. Now that I have had it for 5 months and spent time geting to know it I feel all aspects of the 9500I (other than ramp up for some people) work perfectly when used intelligently.
I have not had any laser alerts on my 9500I yet but I have had some on my old 8500 and a few were unexplainable.

I feel you CJ.....Like most things, sometimes in the end you just have to
buy it and try it, then come to your own conclusions. BTW, thanks for the advice about using Expert Mode on the 9500i. I read that in one of your earlier posts and have been using it every since. Love how you can detect
multiple bands this way, especially if you have previously locked out an area with Tru-Lock

I guess it would depend on the angle you approach the light. Just like different remotes have to be held at different angles. Or, how you can drive countless times into a setting/rising sun, and it will only set off laser once.

It's the time of the year when the sun is lower in the sky during our normal commute times. Your laser falsing was likely due to this. It can be annoying and if it happens too often I'd call Escort about it.
