Default My 9500i lost it's sound alerts tonight!!!! Plz help!!

My 9500i detector doesn't ouput the sound alerts anymore. I switched it on and off several times and made sure to raise the volume to the max with no luck!! anyone knows what the problem might be? I hope it's something easy to fix in the programing or something as simple as that!!! as I don't have time to send it back since I need it for my daily commuting trips!! I think I would loose my license in one day if I don't have this detector in my car!!

There is no "help" for this. The speaker is blown, plain and simple. It seems that Bel and Escort units have had a rash of speaker troubles lately.
MEM-TEK offered some workable solutions for DIY'ers on this topic. The best solution is to send the unit in for repair. The 9500i speaker is a plug in unit, you could ask Escort to send you just the speaker and you could plug it in yourself. I doubt that the CS will do that but it's worth a try.

Send it in, they will fix it, and ask for the software update as well. You will be glad you did

Damnnn it. I was hoping I wouldn't have to go through the hassle of sending it forth and back!!! oh well. thanks for the reply! I will ask the CS to send me just the speakers, it would be great if they do that and I replace it myself!!

The 9500i is quite as it is!!! now I'm having a super quit ride with the speakers completly blown!! what a great feature

    Hi BLK_BNZ,

Belscort may have finally received PUI's new "high temp" version of the PUI speaker used so many different Belscort radar detector models. Ask Escort CS if they can send you one or two replacement speakers since the speaker is very easy to install inside the 9500i.

You will need to remove the serial number sticker to gain access to the screw which is under it. As far as removing the serial number sticker is concerned, start by carefully lifting up one corner using a knife or razor blade and then very slowly work the knife or blade under the sticker just a bit more -- maybe about 1/4". At this point, switch the blade or knife for a small flat screwdriver blade, use your finger to hold the sticker against the flat of the blade while gently pulling up more of the sticker, and with your other hand use the knife or blade as needed to continue separating the sticker. Eventually you will have enough of one end of the sticker lifted up to then carefully pull up the rest of the sticker. If you work very slowly, nearly all of the sticker's adhesive should remain stuck to the sticker rather than to the radar detector case. Once the sticker is removed, lightly stick it to a piece of wax paper to keep the sticky stuff free of debris.

Now you can open up your 9500i to replace the speaker! Its best to cut open an anti-static bag and use the inside of the anti-static bag as your work surface once you've opened your 9500i. As long as you keep your 9500i on the anti-static bag, sit still and don't slide your feet around on the floor, and keep a hand or part of your arm in contact with the anti-static bag, then you, the 9500i, and everything else on the bag will be grounded to the same electrical potential -- preventing you from zapping anything inside your 9500i.

NOTE: The large capacitor within the 9500i contains a charge even though the 9500i is powered off! The first thing that you want to do is to use a 100K ohm resistor to drain this charge away. This can take a minute or two. Simply use a volt meter to see if the voltage across the capacitor has drained down to nearly zero volts. Once the voltage is down to nearly zero volts, you can then use a 100 ohm resistor to quickly drain away the last amount of remaining charge. At this point you are good to go for replacing the internal speaker which is basically a no-brainer to do.

Tomorrow (Friday) I receive my brand new 9500i! I can take pictures of the process to open up a 9500i and how to drain the large capacitor, along with photos showing how to remove the speaker from its mounting frame. You see, I plan to replace my 9500i's speaker (if it isn't the new high temp model) with a modified Kobitone speaker.

    Best Regards,

    --Michael

Do NOT remove the serial number sticker! It's not necessary to open up 9500i.

Thanks for the incredibly detailed step-by-step on how to change the blown speaker Mem-Tek!! I really appreciate you taking the time to write these directions, a lot of members will benefit from this in the future, no doubt!! I will call the CS and hope they agree to send me the speakers without me sending them back the whole Unit!

I must admit though, I'm a little skeptical to change it myself after reading the directions on how to do it now. You brought up some great info about static and charged capacitor and this other stuff that I don't have the tools to do it myself, I have no idea where to get the 100k ohm resistor to drain the charge away!. I was hoping to just open it up, swap the blown speaker and close it back. But it seems like this might have to be a delicate microscopic operation and I'm not sure I should do it in fear of blowing an essential detector sensor or something like that and not know about it until I get nailed by a LEO later on !!!!!

Oh! that's good to know! it'll def make me less nervous then knowing I can open it up without causing the warranty to get voided!

Opening any electronic device usually voids its warrantee.

Ok, another update on my unit! I think it's burning up from the inside, so now I'm obligated to send it over to escort! I was traveling back home from work, a 1 mile ride. I reach home I turn the cars ignition off and next thing I hear is a zap sound! Sounded like a bug just got zapped in one of those electric zappers! Anyways, I get excited and though maybe the sound alerts are back, I turn the ignition back on but nothing again, no sound alerts still, I can see the display starting but nothing! I take it off from the windshield to play with the volume and I start to smell a burnt plastic/electricity wires smell!! Great!! The detector is toast! It still works and all except the sound alerts but I unplugged it for now, I’m hoping to get a new unit since who knows what the hell just burnt inside that thing, I don’t think I can trust this unit anymore. If they don’t replace it I think I will buy another one. I have the 3 years warranty still, so I hope I’m completely covered! Oh, and I purchased my detector sometime back in February when they first came out.
