Hey I am new to the whole radar detector biz but I was wondering if the detector tells you when a cop is around just in general, not necessarily running his gun.
Thanks

no.
Just when there is radar present.
It's a radar detector, not a cop detector.
Not every cop car has a radar gun, and not every radar gun is on all the time.

well if theres a cop around and you dont see him or detect and fly past him, cant he pull you over for speeding by turning his radar on real quick and getting you?
It's called Instant On radar, yes he could do that. This is why you use rabbits (car's out in front speeding ahead of you to flush the cop out).Originally Posted by crombieboy182
As most people in here know... radar detectors are useful only contingent upon the user, the environment, and the cop you are avoiding. Additionally, cops have other methods for issuing speeding tickets that radar detectors cannot protect you from, i.e. laser, vascar, and they can pace you (but the speed difference varies by state to issue a citation in this situation). Even beyond these methods, if you go "speeding" past a cop and it is of significant speed they can pull you over and give you a ticket for "driving to fast for conditions" or if you are too near the limit of the car I would imagine a reckless and/or careless might be applicable depending on the state and judge. Along with all this there is Instant On radar that is hard to detect... so basically do anything you can to see the cops one way or another then slow down when you know they are around. I probably did most of my "bad" speeding when I was in high school and did not have a detector. However, I never received a ticket b/c I payed extreme attention to my surroundings at all times I was speeding and did the speed limit in open areas with too many places for cops to hide.
Also, the most amazing thing to me when I first got a detector was that more than half the cops (especially in the city) do not even have their radar guns on.
I live in MI, so would it be smart to get the 9500? or do you think they use a lot of laser detectors
No matter what detector you get, laser will be a threat to you unless you have a laser jammer. If I were you, I would post in the regional forum and see what they use where you are. For me a radar detector is a bare minimum and I cannot drive without one anymore (not in the U.S. anyhow).
About the 9500i specifically, everyone who has responded to you, just about, has a 9500i and that is a 450 dollar detector so I think that says a lot. It is one of the best detectors out there (virtually a 8500X50 with updates) and with GPS, so you can have max sensitivity and can lock out what you know are false alarms. However, if you drive on open country roads and interstates most of the time you may prefer the arrows of a V1. Also the 8500 X50 has awesome range and good filtering... so it just depends on you and where you drive. Also, if you get the 9500i I would drive around with it on highway for the first little while so you know all the "false zones" in your area and put it in expert mode so you see how much of what there is... I have seen 2 k's and 4 X's in one parking lot before. (I am saying that because it doesn't sound like you have had a detector before. Everyone that has a detector and really knows how to use it can tell you the specific band present in every part of their home town (some people even know the frequencies [e.g. K 24.153 or something])).
Mostly Ka and K in Michigan. I travel the state alot and have only run into Lidar on I-75 in Auburn Hills and on 696 in Farmington Hills.
Detroit area local PD's usually use Ka with sporadic K guns. X band is sporadic above Bay City and Saginaw.
If you venture into Ohio it's a different story. Lidar Festival on the turnpike.
