Need Help Hardwirng Passport X50

Guys, I want to use a good quality Telephone wire and inline fuse both of which I have to hardwire my Passport X50 into my cars fuse box. Can anyone tell me which of the 4 wires are positive and negative, etcetera. What size fuse should I use? Thanks for any help.

if you look at the original included passport cord, the red wire is the +12 and the green wire is the ground. I wired up my RX65 with some phone wire that I had around and just crimped my own plug like you're trying to do. Worked out nicely.

Kronos, if you have a multimeter or access to one, use it to verify your polarity after connecting. Like that the old carpenter's saying, "measure 10xs, cut once."

Even a voltage test lamp will work.

I open up the stock Passport coiled cord housing and was surprised to not find a fuse. I was wondering what size to use in my fuse holder.

I had a Valentine one and replaced it with the X50 so all the hard wire stuff is there.

Check the specs inside the book. The fuse size should be in there.

We use a 250 volt 2 (amp) fuse for the 8500 X50 Passport.

If you connect it directly to power using the cord instead of the hard connection hardware, you might be bypassing filters inside the power cord. I know the V1 has a filter cap inside the plug.

Never really thought of that. Might open up my Bel plug and see what's in it. I've never had any acceleration/alternator noise related falses, so it's working OK for me. From what I could tell from the pictures, the only add-ons that the direct wire that Roy sells has over one you make yourself is the fuse holder and some nice little terminals on the end thought.

The V1 power plug uses a 1uF (105) capacitor across the 2 inner power pins. From what I read, earlier V1's used to false sometimes on laser and and a re-designed plug was introduced in 1999 with the 1uF caps. The laser falsing would go off at full throttle while accelerating. (The original escort 8500 falsed the same way, so no 8500>V1). I am not sure if the 8500X50/RX65 has a filter cap inside the plug; I don't own one.

From what I read, the lidar falses would be caused by voltage dippig.

Ok, my nerdish curiosity got me. Opened up the Bel Smartplug. Has no filter cap, only a few resistors, one transistor, and one fuse (soldered in). Picture included for any that care...
