    Default 8500 x50...

    Alright...

So, I had my 1.6k mile trip last week, everything seemed okay with my X50 with a few exceptions...

When I just started my car, I had at least 5 false laser... wtf? (within .. 5 minutes? res area, def no cops around.) (no faster than 50 mph...)

Then on my trip it was doing fine, caught a few cops in cali with KA, no laser...

On the way back... the x50 was still doing okay, caught a few cops....

but the real problem began ... about 2 or 3 days ago, it gave me like 2 false laser... and then it got so annoying I jsut unplugged it..

about 20 miles later, I turned it back on, had this message "self cal" wtf is that? and then I restarted it and its doing fine so far...

    ebay orders.. .iffy

my x50 has been back to the shop twice now for problems similar to yours. at first it was all bands including laser. then it went to k band.

    it's frustrating.

Regarding the laser falses, it's either an electrically noisy line, or, alternatively, RF interference (which will be harder to track down). If your vehicle is equipped with either a factory or aftermarket nav. system, DVD/entertainment system, or carputer, with display-screen, there could be some form of visible/IR light interference, too.

This thread is a good place to start:

In terms of the "Self Cal" -->

I wouldn't quite worry about it, just yet. Several of us have seen the very, very occasional and rare "Self Cal" display, and have our units work just fine. In over 3 years of owning my Rev5 x50, I've actually never seen this display, even once.

Try a "hard reset" on your x50 - hold down the two buttons at the top as well as the unit's mute button on its "face" while you power it on. This will cause the unit to reset. Sometimes, this can "cure" problems.

Be sure you go through and reset your Preferences, though, as the reset will return all such Preferences to factory default.

kensteele - That sucks. A local Scooby enthusiast also had to send his newly purchased x50 back for adjustment/repairs, due to a similar "persistent K-band false" issue, like yours.

    hey, thx so much.

Since I drive a 04 Camry... I dont have a carputer or any DVD navi equiment... so I don't know what's wrong. I think what I am going to do is just turn laser off for now until someone has a solution, (I would rather not send my x50 back to escort)

and Self Cal is coming up quite often, I really don't know what to do.

But what I have done so far, is a hard reset, hope that helps.

I will def. update if there is any progress.

To me it sounds a lot like a power issue to the RD.

The cig lighter could be an issue if it has some corrosion inside, but lets first rule out the either the smartcord or the hardwire install. First, which are you using to power your RD -- smartcord or hardwire?

    Smartcord

Smartcord. Okay, try the obvious first by testing your RD and smartcord in another vehicle. If it works okay in the other vehicle then you could have some corrosion or a power issue in the cigarette lighter. The corrosion could be on the surfaces within the lighter socket itself or there could be corrosion between any riveted together metal connections within the cigarette lighter socket. Another possibility is slightly fatigued connectors in the wire harness which plugs into the back side of the cigarette lighter. That is easy to fix too.

If you still have problems in another vehicle, first try recrimping the RJ-11 telephone style connector using a RJ-11 crimp tool. That might solve the problem. If that doesn't, then open up your smartcord by removing the screw and then carefully lifting away one half of the plastic case such that you get it to also separate from the silk screened sticker covering the LEDS. Remove the sticker from the other half of the case and temporarily stick it to a piece of wax paper to keep its sticky back surface clean. Now have a look at the soldered connections of all four wires. In particular, look for fraying of all wires where they are soldered in place. Excessive engine vibration could have caused these wires to vibrate and subsequently fray at the points where they are soldered, thus greatly reducing the current carrying capacity of the wire. If you see this then you need a new smartcord.
