How often does the 8500 X50 self calibrate? In the six-ish years I used the standard 8500 I think it self calibrated twice.

The X50 calibrates itself at start-up and periodically during operation, without indicating anything on the display. One person on here was told by a customer service rep that it calibrates itself every 8 minutes.
If it actually shows self-calibration on the display, that is an indication that it is having some trouble calibrating normally.
No doubt the 8500 has a much better repair/track record than the X50
If you power on the X50 in the area of a door opener, does this affect the calibration at start-up?
99% of the time, no. Once in a blue moon you might encounter a really old door opener whose frequency isn't stable due to power problems. This could cause a Self Cal message when powering up in front of such a door opener. Simply head out of the parking lot and power up again. All will be fine.Originally Posted by aradarnut
Do you happen to know how long does the calibration last?Originally Posted by jimbonzzz
Hmmm... could that explain why sometimes my X50 is sluggish to respond to pressed buttons - only for a few seconds though. Something like a PC waking up from a low-power mode, or like some app is hogging up 100% of the CPU
This is usually a sign that a Self-Cal is imminent.Originally Posted by ahmadr
Basically, AFAIK, this is what happens.
The X50 is constantly sweeping its LO looking for radar signals. While it is doing this, it also checks its own calibration by looking for harmonics against a crystal-based second LO (Jim can describe this better than I can). Basically it's going, scan X, scan K, scan Ka, scan for calibration, rinse and repeat.
If it "misses" the calibration signal, it might pause for a moment to "search" for it. If that search takes less than a second or two, it'll happen transparently to the user. If the search takes longer, Self Cal will appear on the display, and it'll go into a more extensive calibration check. If that check passes, the unit resets and goes back to normal. If not, Service Required appears.
If the unit seems to be hesitating (this can be clearly observed if you select the scanning dot or scanning plus sign in the PILOT display), it is probably having to search more often for the calibration signal, meaning it is either going out of tune or starting to fail. Chances are you'll see Self Cal soon.
You may want to try doing a factory reset (hold down all 3 buttons when turning the unit on). Sometimes that will help. All your programmed settings will be erased if you do this.

You know, I fear that my X50 may be in this phase. Maybe im being paranoid, but sometimes the scanning dot lags (not real bad, but simply not a smooth flow either) I've had about 2-3 self Cal message in the past month. No service required yet. I wonder if occasional scanning dot lag is not bad?Originally Posted by kpatz
If you're getting that many Self Cals, your X50 is showing signs of illness. I'd send it out to get fixed. You don't want to miss an early warning of a trap because your X50 was attempting to check its calibration.

So you think 2-3 self cals in a month or two is bad eh? Need you to confirm this patz because I think i have a month or two warranty left.Originally Posted by kpatz
