I mount all my Radar Detectors on the passenger side visor. All nicely hard wired into the ceiling center console (about 8 inches of wire).
This avoids theft.
This avoids the cop from seeing if I was pulled over.
This avoids the sun deteriorating it faster.
I know it reduces performance in some areas.
But with the GPS this becomes an issue. The GPS does still lock but it takes a while. Sometimes 10 minutes or more. Once locked it usually stays locked.
So I wanted to see if I could boost the GPS reception. I was going to buy one of those stick on GPS antenna's and then suspend the other bare end in a loop over the visor. But I asked an EE friend if this would work. He said it might. Then he asked if there was a power cord to it. I said yes but only 8 inches or so.
He said put a choke on it. That will turn the cord into an antenna.
So I popped the choke on and bingo !!
When leaving work it locked before I was out of the driveway.
From home (after being off for 2 days) it locked on in about 5 minutes. Still way faster than before.
I'm gonna try fiddling with the choke position and where along the wire to try to closely match the GPS wavelength. Currently the choke is about 6 inches away from the detector.
If your radar already has clear sky view then don't bother with this. But if it's restricted in anyway and it's taking a while to lock try it.
