Default yet another 9500i mounting question...

so I discovered I am in fact able to mount the 9500i above the RVM, this is the ideal place for me not so much because I think 6"-8" will actually make the slightest difference in radar detection, but just because I eventually want to get a hardwire and think that will look/be the neatest. For whatever reason, I can't get the RD to point directly center. It seems to point either to the left or the right by a few degrees. For those experts out there, do you really think this will matter, or should I still be ok? It's not even something noticeable unless you actually look at it for a few seconds and what not. I'm just paranoid

It's fine up there. It does not need to be perfect.

It depends on what you mean by a 'few' degrees, a Cobra users 'few degrees' is a bit different then my version of it.

To be honest: It really shouldnt hurt radar range to any noticeable extent... laser again shouldn't be hurt all that much, except by the tint (and actual increased distance from targeted areas) from it being mounted higher.

You are probably fine, but a picture to let us know what your talking about would be helpful, for us and you.

I try to be a perfectionist about my RD's being straight/level from nearly every angle.

You'll be fine, it's a 9500i, you could stealth mount it under your seat and it would still work. (Probably shouldn't go that extreme though)

I don't understand why you can't get it straight though? Is it just you spent 10 times resticking the suction cups and the laser level your using still reports it being slightly off? Just don't feel like fooling with it anymore?

You'll be fine, don't loose any sleep over it.

Ya, i must have remounted my 9500I 500 times (Literally). Eventually i made a plexi glass 2"x3" mount that keeps it perfect, plus it sticks better.

The mettle bracket is somewhat bendable.

    +1.

Bend the metal bracket, if you need to. Just don't go crazy - remember, bending metal can eventually lead to it breaking along the bend-line.

The other potential concern here is if the OP's windshield carries significant curvature - think of it as a wrap-around helmet visor - in which case, the detector can see a significant "right/left" issue.

Although my windshield is in no way as raked and as dynamic as that of, say, a Lotus Exige's, I still have to compensate for this.

I was trying to get mine to point to the center as well but due to the curvature of my glass my deflects to the left a little....I hope this doesn't affect performance too much.

I kinda have a sorta similar situation and its been freaking me out. I put my 8500 x50 up to the left of my rvm and it hangs a tiny bit low and points up, or if I move it one notch back it hits the windshield and points a tiny bit down.

and it really is a tiny bit but I feel like im going nuts about it.

    zarry,
You can bend that metal bracket into an unlimited number of possibilities and not just up and down at the factory crease on it. Pop the suction cups off and clamp it in a vise or hold it with some pliers and bend the back portion in or out a little as needed to get it just like you want. This will give you a little more space to play with by just even giving it a very minuet bend.

With my bracket I have to actually push up on the detector, somewhat lifting on the bracket when I slide it in. Once its all the way forward and I can feel it lock in I let go of it and it drops perfectly level and just the top is pressed nicely against the windshield keeping it from bouncing around while driving. It took a couple minutes of bending in different ways on the metal bracket to get it just right, but once you have it you don't need to ever mess with it anymore.

Don't be afraid to bend that bracket as needed, you aren't going to break it, you'd have to keep bending it back and forth in the same spot a hell of a lot of times before you fatigue the metal enough to snap it.

^ +1 to all counts above.

I was lucky that I didn't need to go the vise route - but yes, I've done that before, on other installations' mounts.

And that's precisely how I've had my Escorts "slotting in," over the years.

Makes for a secure and vibration-free mounting.
