Default Solo S2 Versus X50 - My Experience

I owned the Solo S2 for about 2 years. Now I bought the X50 because I heard it was better than the S2.

After using the X50 for a week, I noticed that it does not pick up signals as strongly as my Solo S2. While the Solo S2 picked up the X and K band signals VERY early, and with a strength of 6 (max), the X50 only picks it up as it drives by with as signal of 3. The S2 picked up a speed detector sign used by cops 0.9mi early using X band, but the X50 only picked it up about 0.5mi early... I thought that the X50 is supposed to be better?

Solo S2 sounds a LOT better and looks a LOT better too. The display on the S2 is amazing. The sounds are so different for each band and the laser sound is awesome. I don't like the X50 sound that much. The K band chirp is very harsh.

    Any input?

My S2 is amazing. I've never driven with or owned an X50 so i really do not have anything to compare it with but the only thing lacking in the S2 radar detection is the range on the Ka band. It still gives you ample time to reduce your speed but it is not as much notice as K or X bands. The only other thing that sucks with the S2 is the display. It is soo hard to read in sunlight, although the sounds are very distinctive and almost eliminate the need to look anyways.

The cordless RDs are supposed to have like 20% less range. Maybe your X50 thinks its a trash signal until you are at 0.5 miles

NO WAY that a corded HIGH performance detector can be outperformed by a cordless detector!I GUARANTEE that!

I have owned both S2 and X50 and I can say from experience that the X50 has greater range no matter what people say. Even though the S2 has awsome range and allows plenty of time to slow down...the X50 still has better radar range. On X band though the Solo S2 might have better range. There is a high probability that it does...

I have wanted a cordless detector for a while, for a backup unit or to use in other vehicles when travelling. I wish that they would come out with some higher performance cordless models.

For a budget model, the new Whistler 1788 looks pretty good, it doesn't appear to sacrifice any performance from the corded models anyway. I would like to see some more testing done on this unit...

I have both the Solo S2 and the X50 and I am very happy with both. I accept the fact that the S2 has less range than the X50. I tend to use the X50 for longer trips and the S2 is used for running errands around town. The S2 is convenient cause it's easier to take on and off without having to deal with the power cord.

Even though one of my vehicles has three power outlets, I prefer to use the S2 when I'm driving with my GPS and MP3 player. It's just one less cord hanging off my dash.

Prior to the S2, I did try out the Bel 946 cordless but it just falsed way too much for me. That's what I like about the Escort models, they're not going off every 30 seconds.
