In my experience, a sure-fire way to trigger a "SELF CAL" seems to be powering in the presence of an X-Band source. You're also likely to get one on the next power up if the source is absent.
This is bad if you work at a supermaket or a site with motion detectors and don't have one at home.

I suspect that if you couple this with starting a car at the same time (with the attendant voltage drop), you are asking for a "SERVICE REQUIRED" or at the very least, tempting fate.
B+ sensing on your car's EMC is suppressed during starter operation. Escort needs to put a delay in before a CAL is initiated in order to avoid this effect. Better yet: VOLTAGE REGULATION
