Default IO encounter or false alarm?

This past Saturday my wife and I were driving on I-95 north from Raleigh headed into Virginia. It was mid-day, light traffic. My wife was driving about 80 I would guess (PSL was 65) when all the sudden BAM! - full bar strength K band alert from the x50. She tapped the brakes and brought our speed down to PSL. The alert lasted about 3-5 seconds and then silence. We were both looking all over but saw no LEOs. The highway was divided with four lanes on each side and a rather large median with lots of bushes and trees - plenty of good hiding spots. But we saw nothing and continued on our way without any further alerts or LEO sightings. This was about 20 miles before we reached the Virginia state line.

I know this is hard to say but could this have been a false alarm? Do falses ever occur that suddenly and at a full bar to boot? Or was this IO from a well concealed LEO targeting someone on our side or perhaps the opposite side?

    Any thoughts?

It's possible that an el crappo detector caused it but more likely it was a well hidden LEO, or one headed the other way (southbound) that you didn't see.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

I would also guess it was an LEO going the other way. If you were both moving fast coming at each other, with a bunch of trees in the midle, throw in a curve or hill you might get an alert like that.

We don't have our radars on constantly. We "quick fire" to get a lock. The LE may have not had time to turn around or it was unsafe to do so.

Thanks for taking the lives of your fellow motorists into your own hands by driving irresponsibly. :?

In my area, the state police often use constant-on (CO) Ka band. I saw dozens of examples just a few days ago. Given the ~5% radar detector usage, they were plenty busy with the other 95%. I also saw a good use of instant-on (IO) that you described. That's just the state police. Around town, local LEOs typically use LIDAR, but sometimes I'll see CO or IO Ka.

The incident in question may or may not have been directed toward them. A sudden Ka burst to full strength is likely from a LEO and not a leaky Cobra in a neighboring car. Beyond that as to the situation, there's far too many variables and possibilities as to what the entire situation was. Same goes for the described PSL+15 on an 8-lane divided highway as being declared inherently irresponsible without any consideration to prima facie is premature.

Ok give it a rest. You aren't going to stop speeders by saying "please don't speed"..

I'll go 15 instead of my usual 10 over on my way home just for you

Is an I/O radar a different type of radar gun, or just a normal radar gun where the operator switches it on and then quickly switches it off after getting a reading?
