Its kinda outdated.It make the x50 look like it cme out yesterday.The x50 came out about 1 1/2 years ago. So the 4500 is ancient expecialy to todays threats.

I had a 4500 and it is very short sighted on KA band. It was good at the time but on ebay you can get them for next to nothing now.

i figured to dig this thread out of the dead. I have the opportunity to buy a used 4500 for 30$. I know its not as good as today's top notch detectors but is it at least better than a cobra or an early warning?

It really depends. . if you're looking to speed. Than don't waste your money. If you're just curious if the LEO has his radar on - yes - this will be fine.

If you're going to speed - just invest in something worthwhile.

I wouldn't buy it for $30, and I definitely wouldn't depend on it for protection. Whether it is as good as today's Cobras or Early Warnings is debatable. I believe that X and K Band range on the 4500 is less than the original X/K Passport, and Ka is almost worthless.

I would assume that the 4600 is better than the 4500 and this is how it did in testing back in the day. I couldn't find any testing of the 4500. Click on the bottom 3 images to make them bigger.
