First off Alabama is doing another take back the Highways campaign but I don't know if any other states are going to join like last time.
Secondly, Alabama DOT has deployed laser on I-10 in Baldwin County and on I-20 in Tuscaloosa.
Also, Alabama DOT has started putting regular DOT vehicles (such as work trucks) in the middle of the road w/ State troopers in them using radar (usually KA band) to radio ahead to officers waiting on the side of the road, at on ramps, and places in the median. The 2nd officer will be the one to pull you over and that is legal here.
Also, ADOT has recently started using industrial style lifts on the side of the road with people shooting radar and using radios because it looks like construction equipment most people fly by.
I can't speak for the other states but use a rabbit while on I-10 to avoid laser and take any KA band hits deadly serious.
I would advise easing around traffic if traveling Friday or Sunday as there will be ALOT of LEO's on the road looking for retards flying by.
just my 2 cents.

Good luck on your journey I just came back from an Austin - Northern Alabama - Nashville - Austin trip and was extremely impressed with my 9500i. I had 5 hard saves (included 2 laser), 12 other advanced warnings - I guess you could call saves given speed. I will post my experiences soon but watch out in Alabama they are rough and a good eye helped more than the detector. Needless to say I felt safe with the 9500i - something I could not say about the 8500. I would recommend a cheap CB with a decent antenna from the fact that it shaved several hours off my trip from accidents that shut down the freeway (1 in Arkansas and 1 in Texas). CB is not as effective as it once was though, very difficult to get bear reports.

I would very careful about speeding during any major holiday event. The crackdowns and speed focused operations are brutal. However, ironically some of the best speeding times are during the actual event. Like the evening of the 4th when the police patrols get more focused around fair grounds and parks.
Project "BONES" Speed Lab:
Valentine One, Blinder M47 "All Front Configuration"
Pro97 Police Scanner
1 Saves / 3 Strikes as of 8/22/2009
Estimated saves in U.S. Dollars: $200

x2, You couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting a LEO shooting either Ka or laser this weekend in my area. I even saw my first sheriff motorcycle cop shooting k/o Ka. He nailed someone approximately 10 seconds after pulling out of the driveway of our local substation.
