i'd say go with the x50
The non x50 8500 misses quick trigger pulls from ka band guns frequently. Just yesterday I was clocking traffic with a handheld stalker and my 8500 stayed quiet most of the time unless i held the trigger down for a second or so. I was able to get the speed of vehicles without my 8500 making a peep.
The OG 8500's are pretty good on both K and Ka band, very close to the X50.
It depends on which rev 8500 you are talking about. Is it a rev 13 or rev 15? I have a rev 15 Escort "original" 8500 and it is super sensitive on all bands. And my Escort X50 does well also. Just let us know which revision # 8500 you have.
Actually, if you buy it from the Escort store, it should be the last Rev for that model plus a full refreb and tune up. For the money it is a good deal.
If you want it, go for it. I purchased my 8500 off of someone on ebay as "untested". I knew something would be wrong with it, but at $30 for it, It was worth it IMO. It had the laser false bug, so I sent it back in to get the $79 tune-up, it arrived roughly two weeks later and all is good now.
KA seems to work fairly well, I usually don't see it often (not much enforcement when I'm out). I'll be able to test it a lot better once school starts back up, campus police love to run their RADAR (even though they sit in the same spots each time, so not really much of a suprise). I've been able to get 1 bar alerts from the main road at a 90 degree angle from them before, didn't pull onto campus because it was out of the way. And I'm certian it was them, because over the scanner they said they'd be doing "radar training for an hour".
I've gotten one full blast K band alert (I/O) and it scared the crap out of me. Yes, they still use K band around here in Harrisburg/Concord, it's just north of Charlotte.
