Default At how many bars do you feel like you're busted?

I was thinking the other day how I've only once been hit with instant-on and I think it was from a cop coming the opposite way who happened to turn his unit on right then. For sure if it was my side of the highway I would of been toast. 70 (slowing down) in a 55 with barely any traffic.

Other than that it has either let me know ahead of time (one bar) before it shoots up to six (or is it five?) I always figure one or two means you are ok. Three is close and above that you are nailed.

Is that accurate, do you think?

depends on the situation but if u are the only one on the road a radar unit can pick up your speed from 1/2 mile to 1/4 mile or so

My experience has been that radar guns can get your speed at over 1/2 mile away. I'm not sure about some of the new lower power Ka guns though. Keep in mind that I live in a more rural area with less traffic. This may make it easier for radar guns to reach out and "touch you" at longer distances.

    Edit:

I forgot to mention that against standard full power radar guns all Bel, Escort, Whistler Pro78/690, and the V1 should already be well pegged out at full strength a half mile away from the radar gun, assuming that the radar gun is pointed in your direction. I do know that the 9500i, 9500ix and 9500ci peg out at full signal strength 25% sooner than their other models. I guess this feature is to help deal with threats from some of the newer low power radar guns.

    Yeah same here.

So you guys are saying they can pick you up from a 1/4-1/2 mile away? Assuming it is just you right? But would that mean that you would of picked him up earlier since there was not as much interference?

I guess that is why I speed more in rush traffic then on my way home from work/gym at 9-10 PM at night. In the mornings or late afternoon I can get in a group of cars going 75-80 in a 60 and be cool but at night I am doing 60 then 55 the whole time. Of course the latter is why I've been able to get better MPGs out of the car. Always a plus....

Yeah, I totally feel that one.. Sometimes rush hour can do that too, but it's a little rewarding to just cruise 45-50 in 6th and barely be at or above 2K rpm. That's usually when I look at my fuel gauge and trip odometer and then smile.

I have actually found myself being very conservative while accelerating in order to save gas. My car seems to get its best fuel economy at around 65mph rather than 55mph as is being proposed by some ignorant members of congress. So there is the problem for me. I want to drive right around 65mph on the back highways around my locale in order to get the best mpg, yet the psl is 55mph. My radar detector nowadays is more important than ever!

Depends on what type of RD you have. If you have the older ones pre 1997 except foe the V1, it will be just 1-3 bars. Newer ones should be mostly at 7-10 depending on the situation.
