Okay, I just bought a non-X50 Escort 8500 off of craigslist a few days ago... $70 for the suction cups, detector, hard-case, manual, and power supply. My car was hardwired by the previous owner so I just use that... nice and tight setup
1) I got the dreaded re-calibration thingy with a "service required" message after it... I read a few older threads about it here and determined that heat/sunlight may have been a factor. Drove tonight for an hour or so with no problems, and today it was overcast/partly cloudy and it worked a-okay. I'm waiting for a sunny day to see if it bums out again. I also checked the voltage and it's constant between 13.4 and 13.6V... so I don't think that's a problem. I know it bums out in direct sunlight, so what should I do?
2) This is my first radar detector, and I'm wondering if it's working up-to-par... it works fine, it's already picked up a few Ka bands from area patrol cars running their usual spots, but I wasn't impressed with how far away it worked. Maybe it would be worth it to drive it up to the Escort place and have them tune it up? I live in Cincinnati, about 30 minutes south of the Escort place in West Chester
Again, I'm just wondering what the tune-up service would cost...
Thanks in advance!
